Former Porter Novelli Exec Joins Yoxi

John Havens has joined Yoxi, a branding and media organization for entrepreneurs and organizations focused on social good. Havens will serve as EVP of strategy and engagement. In this role, he’ll lead business development for the company and match businesses with Yoxi’s entrepreneurs.

Previously, Havens was EVP of social media at Porter Novelli. Havens was cut from the firm during a round of layoffs this summer that included other firm execs. He was working as an independent consultant for Yoxi before being appointed to this position.

Earlier this year, we reported on Yoxi’s “Trim the Waste of Fashion” contest, which sought out companies with ideas for reducing environmental waste in the fashion and design industry.

Yoxi also announced a new COO and executive producer, Randy Makiej. This is a newly created position.

PN Adds Former Homeland Security Comms Leader, Cuts Other Execs

Sean Smith

Sean Smith, the former assistant secretary of public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, has joined Porter Novelli as SVP with the global crisis communications group.

At the DHS, Smith had a team of 300. The public affairs staff managed comms for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Coast Guard, and other DHS divisions. He handled outreach for the Gulf oil spill, the H1N1 outbreak, and other crises. Prior to that, he served as a spokesperson for Barack Obama during his presidential campaign.

At PN, he’ll report to Kiki McLean, global public affairs head and work in both the New York and D.C. offices.

On the flip side, PN CEO Gary Stockman told PRWeek that the firm laid off executives in the New York and Chicago offices in recent weeks. Among those cut were John Havens, EVP of social media, and Peter Pitts, a partner with the firm and previously its head of global healthcare.

What’s Augmented Reality? And Other Mobile Topics

Don’t we already live in an augmented reality? Kind of, but our reality will get even more augmented said John Havens, EVP of social media at Porter Novelli, during this morning’s panel discussion on mobile marketing at the PRSA Digital Impact Conference.

According to Havens, “AR is the GPS of your life” that could possibly turn every landscape into a screen of information, promotions, and advertising. While he told the audience not to be scared, it seems like we’re voluntarily signing up for a life lived in The Matrix, which kind of rattles the nerves.
