Big Brands Encourage Supreme Court to Support Gay Marriage

An update in case you don’t follow judicial politics: The United States Supreme Court is about to hear a couple of cases challenging the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DoMA), the 1996 legislation that effectively said “in the eyes of the federal government, marriage and related legal benefits can only occur between a man and a woman.”

Public opinion on the issue has shifted dramatically since that law passed, and now more than 200 of the country’s biggest brands are teaming up to let the Supreme Court know that this isn’t just a cultural or political matter–DoMA is making it harder for businesses to operate.

Brands ranging from techies like Facebook and Apple to consumer biggies like Nike and even financial titans like Citigroup and Goldman Sachs signed on to file what’s called a “supporting brief” or “friend of the court brief”. Their major point: DoMA effectively forces us to discriminate against our employees and makes the process of finding, courting and rewarding the talent we need that much more challenging.

How so, you ask?

Trump Says His GOP Endorsement Means Something

Photo: AP

When The Donald announced that he wasn’t running for President back in May, we’d hoped we were done with his political antics. But alas! He has re-inserted himself into the fray with the announcement that he will be moderating a GOP debate in Iowa on December 27. More than that, he’s billing himself as the GOP’s ultimate endorser.

“Some magazines have said I am the single most important endorsement a presidential candidate can have. I don’t know if that’s true, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t say that to brag; I just tell it like it is,” Politico quotes him saying.

A couple of candidates aren’t buying it. Jon Huntsman has declined (Trump says he’s the decliner), with Huntsman’s peeps sending a message on Twitter: “Lol. We look forward to watching Mitt and Newt suck-up to The Donald with a big bowl of popcorn.”

And Ron Paul’s campaign chairman (oh you Ron Paul!) also responded, saying Trump’s inclusion “is beneath the office of the Presidency.”

Haha. But seriously, you know Donald Trump doesn’t give a damn what they say.

Hunstman, Romney, Broadway Bring Visibility to Mormon Religion

In 2008, PRNewser became very interested in the Mitt Romney campaign, as it thrust the former Massachusetts Governor in to the spotlight as a de-facto spokesman for the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints–or the Mormon religion. At the time, a confluence of pop culture and current events put him there, and then it became a non-issue as John McCain rose up to become the presumptive nominee for the GOP.

Fast forward to today, and we have not one but two viable candidates with former Utah Governor and ambassador to China (nominated by Barack Obama) Jon Huntsman entering the race with a campaign video last week. Say what you will about the ad, his resume is ridic.
