We’re sure Arnold had some big plans for this current press offensive, but we can’t see too many benefits. In fact, we’d question the wisdom of his big comeback tour–and we’re not the only ones.

We echo the question Jon Stewart asked him last night: Why write the book now? Couldn’t you give it another year or two to wait until the heat cools off? The public may have a short memory, but this is ridiculous.

And why confess to multiple affairs that no one outside your immediate family knew about or cared about (and to describe said affairs as “hot”)? This is pure tabloid fodder–and it makes Maria Shriver’s defense of her candidate husband in the wake of the infamous groping allegations seem even more bizarre. While Arnold did manage to say that his affair with his housekeeper was “the stupidest thing” he did during his marriage, we’re not sure that his performance has been terribly convincing. His “I’m not perfect” moment on “60 Minutes” was particularly lame.

Schwarzenegger admits that his kids aren’t comfortable with him airing his dirty laundry to anyone who will listen (ya think?), but his publicist didn’t seem to mind. Why is that? Oh right—he has a book to sell.

Newsweek/The Daily Beast had some high-profile departures this week.

The Early Show is being overhauled with a new studio and new talent, including Oprah’s friend Gayle King and media vet Charlie Rose. Chris Wragge, who was brought in from WCBS/Channel 2, will not be the primary host of the show starting next year but has a contract through 2014.

And Jim Romenesko‘s resignation from Poynter.org, following criticism from the site’s online director Julie Moos over “questionable attribution,” sparked plenty of discussion across the media.

Ryan Gosling fans are pissed off that their guy wasn’t chosen to be People‘s Sexiest Man Alive. Fans protested in front of the magazine’s offices to let the editors know that they made a mistake putting that other gorgeous man (French-speaking sexy master Bradley Cooper) on the cover. We’ll call it a dead heat. BuzzFeed organized the faux-test.

Joy Behar‘s HLN program was cancelled.

A high profile biographer, Kitty Kelley, is about to release a much anticipated, albeit unauthorized biography of one of the biggest names in media, Oprah Winfrey. One would think all of the big talk shows would be eager to have her on during the promotional tour for the book. Not so.

Galleycat highlights the following excerpt from an interview with the NY Times, in which Kelley says, “In promoting this book, we have already been told by Barbara Walters‘s producer, No, you cannot be on The View, I cannot disrupt my relationship with Oprah. Joy Behar, the same thing. Charlie Rose; Larry King said, I will not do it, it might upset Oprah. Even David Letterman.”

Kelley’s Winfrey biography debuts on April 13. In mid-April, mediabistro.com will feature an exclusive Media Beat interview with the biographer about the book.
