Roll Call: Edelman, Ogilvy, King + Company and More

Edelman announced the appointment of Glenn Engler as global chief of staff and director of corporate strategy. Engler will serve as chief of staff to president and CEO Richard Edelman, and assume the newly created role of director of corporate strategy, in which he will manage advancement of the firm’s strategic planning process. Engler also will work closely with Edelman’s 10-member executive committee to forge new working relationships and synergies across the organization. He will report to Richard Edelman and work closely with Matthew Harrington, global chief operating officer, and Victor Malanga, worldwide chief financial officer. Engler most recently served as CEO of Digital Influence Group, which he helped turn into one of the largest stand-alone social media creative agencies in the U.S. through its work with brands including IBM, GE, AT&T, Glidden Paints and Reebok. Prior to that, he was president of Digitas’ Boston operation, where he oversaw 900 people across the Boston, Detroit, and Atlanta offices. Spin the Agencies of Record

Loews Regency Hotel in New York City chose the Susan Magrino Agency as its PR AOR in anticipation of a January 2014 re-opening following a top-down $100 million renovation.

While we have no idea what the new facade will look like, the chef at Loews Regency’s as-yet-unnammed “concept” restaurant will be Dan Silverman, formerly of the Standard Grill in the André Balazs hotel of the same name. (And yes, we’re already salivating.)

Susan Magrino also landed interior design firm Meyer Davis Studios and Hammacher Schlemmer, a mail order gift company that claims to be America’s oldest catalog publisher, sells products like “the authentic 1966 Batmobile”, and resembles a Bizarro World cross between Brookstone and the J. Peterman catalog (it’s real, and it’s spectacular).

King + Company (formerly Morris + King Company) retained several high-class clients that sadly leave us little room for snark:

Nope. Not that.

“My first job was in retail at the age of 14, and I have worked in the industry ever since.” – Rachel Roy

The National Retail Federation has retained digital agency Rain (PR AOR Sunshine Sachs) to create digital shorts for its industry campaign site This Is Retail. The purpose of the campaign is to convince young people that a career in retail doesn’t necessarily mean working the register for $10 an hour.

NRF SVP Bill Thorne says “We want young people to think retail when they are on the job hunt”, because the booming industry truly does need more employees at a time when jobless rates for young grads are near record highs. The videos are clever (watch one after the jump), but good luck getting young folks to say “Hell yeah, I work in retail!”

Rainbows“Sex is more exciting on the screen and between the pages than between the sheets.” – Andy Warhol

This may well be true, but someone still has to enlighten the public about doing it safely and pleasurably—and for “sexual wellbeing brand” Durex in the Americas that someone will be Porter Novelli.

Novelli already works with several brands belonging to Durex parent company Reckitt Benckiser, and they earned this account by helping the brand expand in China (no mean feat) via social media, event planning, the annual global sex survey, and a “normalization” campaign to help aid the launch of a new sex toy line. We hope they were also responsible for Photoshopping a condom into Chinese president Xi Jinping’s pocket, because that’s some viral marketing we can support:

Is that a condom in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

“If you’re not buying recycled products, you’re not really recycling.” – Ed Begley, Jr., better known as Stan Sitwell.

King + Company, formerly known as The Morris + King Company, will NOT be the AOR for the poorly named sustainable active apparel company Dirtball Fashion.
