First Kit Kat Android Video Subtly Snarks on Apple

Kit Kat and Google Android picked the best possible time to reveal their new partnership: right after Labor Day when news organizations need big stories to turn their content trickles into floods. The Android upgrade’s first video spot is brilliant too, as it subtly but unmistakably snarks on Apple’s reputation as the king of all things “high design”. It’s brand identity in action.

The clip succeeds on more than one level: beyond making fun of tech’s obsession with streamlined products and design-geek details, it also clearly recalls spots starring Jonathan Ive, Apple‘s SVP wunderkind who inspired stories of a company-wide post-Jobs makeover.

Here’s one of his clips in case you missed the resemblance (and yes, it is more than a little over the top):

Google Gave Kit Kat the World’s Best Free Marketing Campaign

This afternoon brings news that Google‘s latest Android operating system will indeed be known as Kit Kat—a name borrowed, with enthusiastic permission, from the familiar Hershey‘s candy.

In other words, it’s a great day for anyone doing PR or marketing for Kit Kat (which we always found to be a little on the dry side, but to each his own).

Here’s the most interesting part about this new partnership: it’s not a paid promotion.

Social Media Brand Chatter Doesn’t Always Leave an Impression

Everybody loved the recent back-and-forth between Kit Kat and Oreo on Twitter, and we’re fond of the “is it an April Fool’s joke or not” concept behind Scope‘s new “bacon mouthwash” campaign. But this little interaction between Charmin (which we love) and Scope on Twitter today shows that sometimes tweeting really is like yelling into the vortex — there’s no one listening on the other end.

Our point isn’t to criticize either of these accounts, which are great (Charmin, for example, does potty humor quite well). It’s just to show that social media is an ever-evolving experiment and that social teams and clients can’t expect every single tweet to be a big hit. There’s plenty of room to test the waters as long as you stay on-brand — and therein lies the challenge.

Here’s the bacon mouthwash video for fun:

Did Oreo Win Twitter Again? (Yes, They Did)

We missed this social media branding win last week, but when the words “Oreo” and “social media” showed up together on our Twitter feed this morning we knew we had to check it out. Seems like the team at 360i (see below)** won again in a friendly exchange between the cookie guys, sort-of rival Kit Kat and a fan who can’t get enough of either. It all started with this:

Kit Kat saw an opportunity and grabbed it two days later:

That evening, Oreo came back and killed it:
