Lizzie Grubman Sued By Former Staff Member

The New York Post reports that Lizzie Grubman is being sued by her former driver/bodyguard Tomas Gonzalez, who alleges she owes him $400,000 (!). Gonzalez worked with Grubman for many years and said to the Post, “She told me people weren’t paying her and she couldn’t pay me.”

The story goes on to say that Grubman’s hairstylist also filed a civil suit against her three months ago seeking payment for services.

Grubman didn’t comment for the story, although both a source and her lawyer jump to her defense, saying her financial house is in order and these claims are “without merit.”

We’ve reached out to Grubman and will update this story with any comment we receive from her.

*Update after the jump.

‘Bridesmaids’ Bringing Back Wilson Phillips… Finally

As if it weren’t enough that the new movie Bridesmaids is six kinds of hilarious, the movie is giving a boost to Wilson Phillips and their 90s musical masterpiece “Hold On.”

Nielsen Soundscan says the song has risen 620 percent in sales and one of the band’s managers says requests for Wilson Phillips have been pouring in. Band member Carnie Wilson credits the band’s publicist Lizzie Grubman for getting them in the movie.

The film continued its box office winning streak this week, not only coming in second (behind the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film), but only slipping by 20 percent in ticket sales from the first week, a great thing for a movie.

We’ve got the old music video after the jump, which is so phenomenal it goes from the beach to the mountains with its powerful messaging of holding on and breaking free. Moreover, because I love music that appears in comedies, we have a Monday “afternoon delight”: an Anchorman bonus is also attached.

2010 Predictions: Bad Pitch Blog Edition

For a “lighter” take on 2010 PR industry predictions, we turned to Richard Laermer and Kevin Dugan, founders of “The Bad Pitch Blog.”

On business prospects for 2010:

Kevin: According to economists, we’ll be eating Ramen noodles for breakfast, lunch and dinner until 2015. But I think PR business will be flat and any growth will be from companies simply doing more with less. Translation: longer hours for the same pay — if you’re lucky. But it’s how these things go in the service industry. It keeps us all thinking, reinventing and learning.

Richard: I will be up in 2010. Thanks to Viagra.

Kevin: Let me guess, you’ll be stiff competition?

On PR M&A activity in 2010:

Kevin: There will be more mergers and acquisitions in general. TV will see the biggest shakeup. Perhaps We and SyFy channels will merge and become WyFy? OK, probably not, but TV’s decline is following newspapers in short order.

Richard: Nothing will merge because no one has the money to spend on an agency. Many will close. Some will merge with small shops. Some will do both. PS: Big success story: AOL! Yeah.

Kevin: You mean “Aol.”

Richard: Oops. They could sue.

Kevin: I see more lawsuits in 2010!

Richard: Hmm. Yeah, it’s the new blackmail.

The biggest PR story of 2010 will be…

Lizzie Grubman Getting Back Into Reality TV?

Publicist Lizzie Grubman once had a reality show on MTV, “PoweR Girls.” Now she doesn’t, and another PR agency owner, Kelly Cutrone, has her own show.

Does Grubman want back into the spotlight? That’s what Gawker suggests after a tipster overheard Grubman chatting up the idea with Elle PR director — who also appears on MTV’s The City — Erin Kaplan. We’ve reached out to Grubman for comment.

Spin Author On the Menu: ‘Everyone Seemed to Have a Crazy Publicist Story or a Crazy Boss Story’

Publicist turned author Robert Rave appeared on mediabistro’s Morning Media Menu podcast this morning. Rave briefly worked for NY publicist Lizzie Grubman and spent nine years in PR, before turning to writing. His book, Spin: A Novel, was released this past August. Grubman told US magazine that the book isn’t about her, but is a “fun fictional story.”

“As much as I would like to say that those experiences are my own – just for the war wounds, it is a novel,” said Rave. “It’s basically how this young guy…learns the ropes of the NY boutique PR industry. It’s not the happy go-lucky type of story that a lot of these books are. It’s an amalgamation of a lot of different experiences of a lot of different people I met while working in PR and living in New York. Everyone seemed to have a crazy publicist story or a crazy boss story.”

So how about some examples? Rave was happy to oblige. “I had a friend tell me a story of a publicist who he worked for and this particular publicist would make sure that they invited the world to whatever event they were having that night, you know, just to be sure that people showed up,” he said. “By the time the night of the event would roll around, it would be packed and people would be waiting and then all of a sudden they check in and [the person at the door would say], ‘No, I’m sorry, you’re name is not on the list.’ People would say, ‘Wait I got a call from your office earlier today, making sure I was coming.’” People would then often ask to speak with the head of the agency, not knowing he or she was already standing right there. “No, I’m sorry, they’re not here right now,” they would say. Listen to the full interview, posted below.

Lizzie Grubman Reps ShamWow Guy

Hoping to prove once again that America loves a comeback, Lizzie Grubman is representing the new and improved Vince Shlomi, born Offer Shlomi, also know as Vince Offer, a.k.a. SlapChop ShamWow pitchman, and prostitute patron.

Grubman ushered Shlomi to Fashion Week to build buzz for the launch of his presumably very absorbent swimwear line. She threw in a trip to Jay-Z’s concert, AND a visit with the cast of “The Beautiful Life,” plus shipping & handling.

The Daily News GateCrasher explains that she doesn’t judge her new client for his indiscretions, because c’on, she can’t do this all day.

Shlomi was arrested on felony battery charges for punching a prostitute in February. She bit his tongue and wouldn’t let go.

Charges were dropped, the ShamWow company Permission Interactive kept him, and here we are. There has been so much news involving infomericals I can’t catalog it all. Slankets, Snuggies, the Discovery Channel show PitchMen, the untimely death of Billy Mays, and now this.

Till the swimwear arrives, enjoy DJ Steve Porter’s Jam Wow again:

Yet Another Reality Show About PR? This Time It’s Kim Kardashian

First it was Lizzie Grubman‘s “PoweR Girls.” Then we heard about Kelly Cutrone‘s upcoming show “Kell On Earth.” The latest entry into the PR reality show ring is none other than Kim Kardashian, who will be producing “a new untitled reality TV show about public relations,” according to People.com.

“The proposed series follows Kardashian’s pals, PR gurus Jonathan Cheban and Simon Huck of the bicoastal agency Command Public Relations,” writes People.com’s David Caplan. Ok, so right now it’s just a pilot, but it has been shot at an “undisclosed cable network,” that is looking to debut the show sometime in 2010.

Will the “undisclosed cable network” see this project all the way through? Your guess is as good as ours. We’ve actually been following Cheban on Twitter for a few weeks, and the publicist’s Tweets are definitely heavy on the “OMG LOL” style of writing, if you catch our drift.

[image: Kim Kardashian and publicist Jonathan Cheban]

Spin, the novel released today about a corn-fed midwestern boy named Taylor Green, whose world is turned upside down when he takes a job as an assistant to the coke-snorting, social-climbing flackstress Jennie Weinstein. He finds redemption…aw, nevermind.

The author Robert Rave briefly worked for Lizzie Grubman. How much of a roman ‘a clef is the book? Gawker has been unspooling Spin for a few weeks: it opens with carrot-colored Jennie snorting lines at 6 AM, and closes with a car crash, “Oh shit. The press is going to eat this up.”

Grubman said over the weekend that it sounds like a “fun fictional story” but isn’t about her.

Oh yeah, apparently Zac Efron wants to play the “straight” Green, bathroom action and all, if the book is adapted.

Stay tuned, Rave has agreed to an interview with PRNewser. First, I must tear through my review copy and highlight the naughty bits.
