Analyzing the Media’s Impact On the Iowa Caucus

Mitt Romney after his Iowa caucus win last night.
With the big GOP’s Iowa caucus behind us (results here in case you’re just climbing out from under that rock), New Hampshire directly ahead, and lots of lingering confusion over who’s really winning this thing, everyone is looking for a way to read the tea leaves with help from the media, digital or otherwise.

Going the traditional route, Mediaite found a correlation between the amount of television and radio coverage a candidate received throughout January 3 and where they placed in the caucus. However, the results don’t determine whether the media is following the voters’ lead or vice versa.

Going into the voting, it was Ron Paul who was riding a social media wave. The Washington Post‘s new @MentionMachine, a new app that tracks the election across Twitter and other media, has Ron Paul on top with more than 363,000 Twitter mentions and more than 5,300 media mentions for the week.

Dems, GOP Contenders Focus on Romney

The Democratic National Committee has launched WhichMitt.com, a site that paints the leading GOP presidential contender, Mitt Romney, as a flip-flopper.

With Romney leading in a number of polls and both Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann losing favor faster than a frog can lick flies, Romney has once again got a bulls eye painted on his back. Add to that the resurgence of the Mormon issue (at least, it’s an issue for some people), and Romney is the name on everyone’s lips.

Bachmann’s Presidential Campaign Launch Makes Headlines, and Not the Good Kind

Photo: Reuters

Michele Bachmann has only been in the race for President (officially) since yesterday, but she’s already battling lots of negative press.

She closed out her Waterloo, IA presidential campaign launch yesterday by having the Tom Petty song “American Girl” play her off. Tom Petty was none too happy and now his peeps have sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Bachmann camp asking them to refrain from such behavior in the future.

This, of course, happened after she kind of mixed up Western movie star and Oscar winner John Wayne with serial killer John Wayne Gacy. She was on CNN American Morning to make it clear that she’s not perfect, but she was a lawyer and a small business owner and knows how to fix the country.

‘One Nation’ Tour May Be A Misstep for Palin

Palin in Gettysburg. Photo: Damon Winter/The New York Times

Sarah Palin is taking a really boring family trip to various East Coast U.S. landmarks. Or maybe her “One Nation” tour is part of her 2012 Presidential run, creating opportunities for her to say things in locations that make her look really patriotic. She won’t say which it is, but she just keeps turning up in places and people keep asking questions and her tour bus keeps rolling on.

Much like Donald Trump, Sarah Palin is great at generating press attention. The ongoing “will she or won’t she run” question is sure to lure the media until a decision is finally announced. But ultimately will this be a successful tour? Or just another thing Palin did that got a lot of attention during a slow news period?
