Walmart Announces Plans to Hire ‘Any Veteran’ Who Applies

Walmart has certainly faced its share of PR struggles over the past few months, but today the big-box leader announced an initiative that no one in his or her right mind could oppose: Beginning on Memorial Day, the company will have a job waiting for any United States military veteran who decides to apply.

The project only includes a couple of qualifiers:

Vets must apply within the first 12 months of discharge

Discharge must have been honorable

According to initial estimates, this will equal about 100,000 new jobs over the next five years. Can Walmart pull it off? In a word, yes. The organization claims to have an annual turnover rate of 37%, and its workforce is so large that it can comfortably guarantee work for every qualified applicant (which isn’t to say that all the jobs will be full-time or that they will be good, but still).

We’ll just come out and say it: this is a great PR move.

Los Angeles Makes ‘Meatless Mondays’ Official

We can all agree that most Americans (ourselves included) would benefit from eating a little less meat. It’s not that meat isn’t delicious or that it’s always unhealthy; it’s just that we tend to rely a little too much on beef and bread.

You may have heard of “Meatless Monday”, a public health PR campaign created in 2003 by marketing vet Sid Lerner and promoted by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine‘s Center for a Livable Future in order to make healthy dietary choices more palatable to the otherwise distracted masses. Why Monday? Turns out we’re more receptive to healthy messages after indulging in the excesses of the average weekend (beer, football, BBQ…you know the deal).

Last week the Los Angeles City Council decided, by unanimous vote, to declare all LA Mondays “meatless” and to incorporate the message into its regular operations. What does this mean, exactly? We imagine that the subsequent PR campaign will resemble a much smaller version of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” project. The city’s mayor might even make a guest appearance on The Biggest Loser (hint hint).

Of course, the city can’t require anyone to suffer through every miserable Monday without the delicious life-giving taste of flesh…

Time Releases Awkward Paul Ryan Photos

We can’t say we’re too excited about tonight’s vice presidential debate between Paul “Seacrest” Ryan and Joey “Walnuts” Biden, but Time just made things a little more…colorful by releasing the results of a 2011 photo shoot that features Ryan lifting weights, wearing a suit and making funny faces. We particularly love the “girl please” shot on the left.

The magazine picked Ryan as a runner-up in its annual “Person of the Year” issue, but editors held off on releasing the photos until today for some reason. Sounds like a conspiracy theory as heinous as last week’s painfully obvious plan to cook the unemployment numbers, doesn’t it, Jack Welch?

In directly PR-related news (you thought we’d never get there), these pics remind us that Ryan has provided some great publicity for a certain red-hot series of workout videos. P90X creator (and former standup comedian!) Tony Horton says that “Ryan’s been very good for P90X, as much or more so as Michelle Obama”, and claims that Secret Service members told him that they’re “really loving the P90X” on a recent visit to the White House.

This love of weightless workouts may be the last example of true bipartisanship that we see for some time. Enjoy.

First Lady Scores Big Social Media Win

<img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-44412" title="Hey there, Twitter.
Yet the Democratic National Convention came close to beating that number on its first day alone. While many pundits have spent the last 24 hours analyzing the speech made by San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro (whose Twitter followership more than tripled in less than a day), the big traffic driver was First Lady Michelle Obama’s “mom-in-chief” speech.

Beyoncé Brings the World to Attention for Humanitarian Day

How do you get 1.13 billion people to “do something good, somewhere, for someone else”? Why, you show them a Beyoncé video, of course! Throw in some impressive CGI and inspiring imagery from around the globe and you’re golden, baby!

For this year’s World Humanitarian Day, which took place on August 19, the United Nations partnered with digital ad agency Droga5 to reach hundreds of millions of people with that very simple, universal message. The campaign, titled “I Was Here” (Twitter hashtags #WHD2012 and #IWASHERE), drew its inspiration from a Beyoncé song of the same name, so of course she was a natural choice to take part in a campaign that will also help burnish her humanitarian cred (the video already has well over 4 million views):

Whoa, There: Spanish Mag Depicts First Lady as a Slave

A Spanish magazine recently made one of the most baffling art choices in memory by running a cover that clearly depicts First Lady Michelle Obama in the guise of a bare-breasted French slave. That’s right–let it settle in. You think they were aiming for controversy? Just a little bit?

The entire internet has subsequently condemned Fuera de Serie (roughly translated as Off the Charts), whose editors seem to be following in the footsteps of the Dutch mag that earned quite a bit of (very negative) attention last year for calling Rihanna a couple of names that we won’t reprint here.

We’ve posted the full image below the “fold” for braver readers:

Michelle Obama Responds to New Book

If you write a book about the inner workings of the U.S. presidency, publicity will come to you. Such is the case for Jodi Kantor, author of The Obamas, an inside look at the President and First Lady during their early days in the White House.

The Daily Beast has a list of what it calls eight of the “best parts” from the book, among them: Michelle didn’t really want to live in D.C., some White House staffers didn’t want her on the cover of Vogue, she butt heads with members of Obama’s staff, and she had a lot of influence on health care reform. Business Insider also has a roundup of “juicy bits” that also focuses a whole lot on the First Lady.

Michelle addressed the book during a sit-down with Gayle King and CBS This Morning, and takes issue with her frequent characterization as “an angry black woman.” That interview above. This new book aside (we haven’t read it), there have been a lot of ugly things said about Michelle Obama that a lot of people should be ashamed of.

continued…

Target Announces New Design Collaboration with Jason Wu

How do you top a sold out, website-crashing guest collection from Missoni? By bringing in Jason Wu for a collection of clothing and accessories, maybe.

Target used its Twitter handle @TargetStyle to give followers five clues about who would be the next guest designer. WWD confirmed in a story today that Wu, who is best known for designing First Lady Michelle Obama’s one-shouldered inaugural gown, will be the next designer up for a guest spot. The new line, expected in February 2012, already has a hashtag, #JasonWuforTarget.

Military ‘Joining Forces’ With Hollywood

Hollywood’s relationship with the military has needed counseling for quite some time. But it took Michelle Obama‘s call for support with the White House’s Joining Forces initiative to get either side to make the first move.

On Monday morning, they showed up in droves.

On a panel moderated by J.J. Abrams — whose own depiction of the military in Super 8 was criticized in the New York Times Media Decoder blog this week – the First Lady urged nearly 500 writers, directors, and producers to help “promote a better understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families” by integrating their experiences into TV, movie, and digital-media story lines.

Brands Benefit When The Obamas Travel Abroad

Photo: Toby Melville, AFP/Getty Images

The Obamas’ trip to the U.K. has been one great photo op after another. First, there were pints of Guinness in Ireland, which the Irish Independent says could generate millions for the company. Then there’s this meeting happening at left at Buckingham Palace between the Obamas and the recently wed Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Needless to say, there were fashion fireworks.

Kate Middleton’s dress cost a mere $340 at the retailer Reiss. Requests for the dress jumped 300 percent after the photo was taken, reports say. Michelle Obama’s dress is by a California designer, Barbara Tfank. Media coverage of every outfit FLOTUS wore available here.

Packaging and The Product: An Evolving Story

Food makers and grocers are stepping up to the plate with their own nutritional take on what’s inside the package.

As governmental pressure mounted for labels that “emphasize nutrients that consumers might want to avoid, like sodium, calories and fat,” a New York Times story says, “manufacturers insisted that they should also be able to use the labels to highlight beneficial nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and protein.”

The result: a labeling system developed by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the Food Marketing Institute, and a $50 million advertising campaign to promote it in the fall.

Michelle Obama Gets GOP Support

Photo:Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP

Our fabulous FLOTUS Michelle Obama (making history at left, according to People, for being the first first lady to wear vintage – a Norman Norell – for a public appearance. We loves!) is getting support for her anti-obesity campaign from Republicans. It’s insanity that this is partisan or political, but these days, what isn’t.

Sarah Palin lashed out against Michelle Obama’s efforts on her show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, by making s’mores in support of dessert. And again she took on the campaign on Laura Ingraham’s radio program while there to promote her book.

“The first lady should ‘get off our back and allow us as individuals to exercise our own God-given rights to make our own decisions,’” the Washington Post quotes Palin. The anti-obesity effort falls under the “nanny state” heading that Palin and others have rallied against apparently.
