Showtunes Meet Seatbelts As Airlines Compete for ‘Campiest Safety Video’

Airlines have now decided that the only way to distinguish themselves from their competitors is to make ever-campier safety videos. The newest clip from Virgin America hit the Internets today, and it has all of director John Chu’s trademark Step Up 2: The Streets subtlety.


This is all just waaaaaay over the top, and the ”people who probably shouldn’t be rapping” joke is at least thirty years old.

These clips are a good way to get media attention in a hyper-competitive industry with shockingly low profit margins, and we’re glad the dancers and choreographers are getting paid. The strategy keeps working for Air New Zealand, so why not follow their model?

But this video is campier than the one episode of Glee that we watched two years ago—and you can expect more of the same to come.

PSA: Accidental Death Is So Damn Cute

Today in Things You Should Probably Remember News:

  • Don’t bother bears, drug dealers, or wasps.
  • Don’t tempt piranhas, serial killers, or rattle snakes.
  • Don’t eat rancid things or take bad medicine.

The Melbourne Metro just issued an almost unbearably cute cartoon PSA starring bean-shaped characters who die in these and other adorable ways. Their point? Don’t mess with trains. The spot’s folksy song, written by McCann executive creative director John Mescall, is catchy enough to stick with you all day–and it’s free on Metro’s accompanying website, DumbWaysToDie.

Why did the Metro feel the need to make this precious, violent PSA? According to a writeup by local affiliate WTVR, Australia’s second-largest city does not suffer from a shortage of stupidity:

Lessons from the No Doubt Video Scandal?

Gwen Stefani of No Doubt via Interscope RecordsYou may have heard that late-90’s “ska” kings No Doubt recently jumped on the comeback train. You may have also heard that the band immediately ran into controversy over the video for their single “Looking Hot.”

For some reason, the video’s director thought it would be a great idea to dress the band members in stereotypical Western/Native American gear: feathered headdresses, leather leggings, teepees, cute cowboy outfits…you get it.

We like to play dress-up as much as the next guy (which is to say not at all), but we’re a little surprised that the creative team responsible for the video couldn’t see the “scandal” coming.

Anyway, the band predictably pulled the spot after too many people complained about it being insensitive to the traditions and concerns of the Native American community; they even shut down their own website’s online forum after discussion of the video overwhelmed fans’ comments.

Today Zimbio asks whether this controversy served any discernible purpose, and it’s a good question. Arguments on both sides popped up over the past week, with some decrying the proliferation of political correctness while others lamented the public’s general ignorance of American Indian history and the perpetuation of long-discredited stereotypes.

Can we take any lessons from the band’s screw-up other than the fact that big-name pop stars should choose their video themes very carefully? Did the band make the right decisions to control the damage? And how could they have avoided the controversy (besides making an entirely different video)?
