Today, thanks to the power of national TV, social media, and a little bit of merchandising, sociopolitical or economic causes can take on a whole new life. Most recently, the death of New York native Eric Garner – who died after an NYPD officer applied a chokehold to restrain him — inspired more than 25,000 to march in Manhattan this weekend.

The line “I Can’t Breathe” has been seen everywhere as a result, and a local sportscaster thought it was fair game for a bad joke. Read more

Deportation Stopped, Thanks to the Internet

How much power is there in social media? Well if Change.org is any example, a lot.

A Los Angeles student has used Facebook and Change.org to stop the deportation of her friend’s father, a man in Nevada she never even met. Jamie Alegra started a campaign against the deportation of Cesar Carlos Silva and garnered 594 online signatures.

Change.org said Alegra did it by bringing her laptop to school and collecting the signatures from fellow students and school faculty. The petition was called “An activist’s father needs your help. Don’t let ICE tear Astrid Silva’s family apart,” and succeeded in keeping Silva in the country.

Change.org is making a name for itself with more than 400,000 new members per month. Presently it’s got a petition asking Bank of America to stop it’s new $5-to-use-your-ATM-card fee that has 134,000 backers.

Census Figures Confirm Surging Latino Growth

Get to know the stars of the latest Telemundo telenovela 'Mi Corazon Insiste'

Newly refined U.S. Census figures released this week show that the Latino population has grown to more than 50 million, with a growth rate of 43 percent, while other ethnicities have not grown as fast. More than half of the growth in the total U.S. population between 2000 and 2010 was because of the increase in the Hispanic population, the Census figures state.

Between 2000 and 2010, the Hispanic population rose from 35.3 million in 2000 to 50.5 million in 2010. This makes Latinos the second largest ethnicity in the U.S. So what can marketers learn from this?

Just Pray for a Hat Trick

As we are busy lighting the third candle on this year’s Hanukkah menorah, a brilliant fan event and PR move comes out of – believe it or not – the National Hockey League.

In what Yahoo! Sports calls “simply one of the greatest fan giveaways in sports history,” the Florida Panthers are handing out a special team yarmulke to every fan at this Tuesday’s home game.

December 7 is Jewish Heritage Night at BankAtlantic Center, and is a celebration of Hanukkah, on ice.

Presented by none other than The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co., the celebration will also have a giant menorah lighting, Jewish music, Kosher food available throughout the game, and post-game, on-ice slap shots. It should be quite a party.
