Nudists Remind Us it’s National Mammography Day

In what could have been a wildly shareable piece of social content, the American Association for Nude Recreation mentioned in passing on their Facebook page to the tune of just 5 Likes at presstime: “Today is National Mammography Day.”

Q: Does the Affordable Care Act restrict my ability to get a mammogram?

A: No. In fact, the law requires insurers to cover mammography, with no cost-sharing, every one to two years for women starting at age 40. Medicare fully pays for mammograms once every 12 months with no upper age limit.

Postmortem: Rihanna’s Crazy Mess of a Tour

Rihanna 777 TourSince we feel like covering the indulgent lifestyles of pop stars today, we’d like to offer a postmortem assessment of Rihanna’s recent PR disaster disguised as a whirlwind international tour.

See, the very concept behind this extended promo event demanded the “stunt” label: The pop star planned to play seven countries in seven days, and she invited approximately 150 music journalists to join her on her Boeing 777 mega-jet (we don’t really get the “7” theme).

Anyway, chaos quickly descended upon the unfortunate entourage. These journalists relayed news of on-plane streaking, hunger, sleep deprivation, lack of bathroom access and general anxiety while receiving very little attention from an apparently disinterested Rihanna. The star’s heart just didn’t seem to be in it: She received boos from fans in Berlin after forgetting the lyrics to her own songs and denied all interview requests during the trip as some journalists began to wonder whether she was on the plane at all.

On first glance, this all looks to be something of a PR disaster. On second glance, it looks even worse.

The Dream Is Over: San Francisco Bans Public Nudity

Photo via Associated Press This week in Local Government Relations: The times, they are a’ changin’–or are they? Just as the Seattle Police Department learned to love its citizens’ newfound embrace of a certain forbidden substance, the City of San Francisco‘s Board of Supervisors made an effort to curb the endless love-in by banning public nudity via a razor-thin 5-4 vote.

Has the decision divided Bay Area residents? Of course it has. Did dozens of advocates immediately stop in their tracks and strip down in protest? Of course they did.

As we learn more, we’re a little surprised by the depth of the City of Love’s long-term “live and let live” relationship with those who have no problem letting it all hang out. According to various reports, city dwellers will no longer have the right to “[lounge] nude in the city’s plazas, [parade] up and down city streets sans pants, or [ride] subways and buses bare-bottomed”. Wait, you mean they could do that before?!?! Apparently Rice-a-Roni wasn’t the only San Francisco treat!

City Supervisor Scott Weiner (tee hee) introduced the ordinance in what seemed like an attempt to counter complaints from local business owners about a surge in “habitual nudists” flaunting their flesh in the city’s infamous Castro district–but he noted, to opponents’ surprise, that “The dominant demographic expressing concern is gay men”. Based on the close vote and the immediate public outcry, we’d say the city has a bit of a public relations problem on its hands–and we anticipate weeks of futile protests punctuated by gratuitous flashing sprees.

Public nudity remains legal in the state of California as long as it isn’t deemed “lewd or offensive”, though we’d say that wording allows for a bit of a slippery slope…and we wonder how the act of dropping one’s drawers constitutes “free speech”. The fact that “…preschoolers can still go bare, women can still go topless and public nudity will continue to be allowed at events permitted by the city” also diminishes the power of the protesters’ point, doesn’t it?

A final note to the City of New York and the MTA: thank you for not letting people ride the train nude. Improv Everywhere‘s “No Pants Subway Ride” already shows us more than enough skin. Read more

Vegas Calls Prince Harry Scandal ‘A PR Boon’

Here at PRNewser, we’ve reported on all the breaking details of ginger troublemaker Prince Harry’s latest scandal, because we’re all about keeping the public informed on the things that matter most.

We even theorized that his drunk nude photo romp would serve as an excellent advertisement for the Las Vegas experience—and according to a report just released by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, we were exactly right!

City power players immediately saw the potential PR value of this incident—they released a clever ad campaign in August designed to “shame” those who leaked the Harry pics for violating the sacred “What Happens in Vegas” code. The campaign involved a full-page USA Today ad, a gimmicky “Know the Code” website, and a video spot:

Today’s report claims that the print ad reached 154 million people and estimates the overall PR value of the incident at $23 million, though we’re not sure how they reached that number since the agency “can’t track how much of the attention translated into actual Las Vegas visits.”

We always found the “What Happens…” tagline to be a bit much, but it does read better than the more realistic “Las Vegas: Encouraging Bad Behavior Since 1911!”

50 Shades of PR Strategies: It’s All about Nudity

From Gabby Douglas to #NBCFAIL, the 2012 London Olympics has been a raucous spectacle of PR intrigue, triumph and disasters. For PR geeks, these games have been an absolute blast. And when it’s all over, when it’s all said and done, we’ll all be talking about that one moment of the Olympics that will remain forever etched in our memories: the women’s water polo wardrobe malfunction.

Move over Janet Jackson. Say hello to the lustful carnival of floating skin that is women’s water polo. That’s right, last Wednesday during a qualifying match between the USA and Spain, American player Kami Craig briefly exposed a Spanish player’s breast during an underwater skirmish. NBC aired the incident to the world, which hasn’t been the same since. Just imagine it. An entire breast. Under water.

The salacious chlorinated romp lasted for entire seconds, and will live forever on the Internet. In fact, today, this article headlined the New York Times website. There are plenty of companies and brands that will pay handsomely for that level of exposure PR. Now they all know what to do. Nudity never fails. Sex sells. Every PR expert knows this well, though not every PR campaign capitalizes on this knowledge.
