President of Ogilvy Government Relations Is Leaving

Drew Maloney (pictured), the president of Ogilvy Government Relations, is leaving the company. Chris Giblin, a GOP lobbyist, will take the top spot.

Maloney is going to serve as the external affairs advisor for the Republican National Committee. Two other senior members of the company — SVPs John O’Neill and Elena Thompkins — are making their departures as well. O’Neill is joining Capitol Counsel, another government relations firm, and Thompkins is launching her own firm, Thompkins Strategies, which will open its doors on July 1.

Of course, there’s speculation that the changes are in some way, shape, or form related to the recent loss of the Chevron client over a perceived conflict of interest related to ongoing legal issues in Ecuador. As for Ogilvy, the firm simply says that it’s “moving forward” with a commitment to its clients and other staff members.

The firm has 11 lobbyists and earned $19.9 million in fees last year.

Chevron has fired Ogilvy Government Relations over what the now former client calls a conflict of interest. The company was Ogilvy’s third largest lobbying client, with the firm making $600,000 in 2011 for its work. According to reports from Ad Age and Bloomberg, Felipe Benitez from the company’s PR arm, spoke to Amazon Watch, an organization that works on behalf of indigenous people. Chevron is involved in a legal battle over alleged toxic dumping in Ecuador. Ad Age is also reporting that Ogilvy PR’s relationship with Yasuni National Rainforest has been put on hold. Ogilvy Government Relations made $20 million from 70 clients in 2011.
