Oxygen’s New Lineup Is Tailored for the Young, Multicultural Female Viewer

chasing mariaOxygen, a network that has always geared its programming towards female viewers, is now going to zero in even more closely on the millennial, multicultural woman with new shows that include a nail art competition, Nail’d It!, that will culminate in a $100,000 prize; Sisterhood of Hip Hop, a reality show revolving around five female hip hop artists in the making; and Living Different, a show that will focus on women living “alternative” lifestyles.

At the network’s upfront, Frances Berwick, president of Bravo and Oxygen Media, said, “African-American and Hispanic and Asian-American and white” women are longing to see themselves better “reflected” on television. This lineup seeks to fulfill that viewer wish.

But more than that, Oxygen is trying to make a statement about its brand. Unlike other reality shows — like those on Vh1 and the shows that are part of the Real Housewives franchise — these shows focus on a more positive outlook on female relationships. So we should expect a lot less shrieking, backstabbing, and finger pointing for a change of pace.

Web, Social Media Continue to Grow More Important For Television

Everyone knows about the upfronts, which typically give broadcasters the chance to speak with media buyers about all the ad spots they should be purchasing. However, the proliferation of digital has shined a renewed spotlight on the ”NewFront.”

NBCUniversal has announced a ton of new digital content for everything from the Golf Channel, CNBC, and The Weather Channel to Daily Candy, Today.com, and Fandango. The digital offerings have positioned a digital ad buy and the traditional broadcast ad purchase as an integrated investment. NBCU’s NewFront event (coverage here and here) had celebs in moderation and did away with screenings, but there were tons of announcements made about some of the new options available.

Lip Gloss That Lights Up!

Look at what we got today!

Oxygen has made these tubes of lip gloss that have mirrors on one side and buttons to turn on a little light. The Mediabistro office is already well-lit so we haven’t had the chance to test the usefulness of this feature, but we’re going to say A+ in advance. Now no one can accuse you of putting on your make-up in the dark. Or maybe you look like you have but you haven’t and now there’s proof you haven’t and that’s actually sad. We still say A+ though.

The tubes were created to promote Oxygen’s show Bachelorette Party, debuting on October 17. The show will focus on classy pre-wedding affairs featuring sit-down dinners, touching moments between families, and joyful expressions of love as the week’s featured bachelorette takes the final steps towards becoming a bride.

Actually, the show has strippers, spandex, bickering, gyrating, and drunkeness with a Vegas backdrop.
