A tenth-grade math teacher protesting Emanuel’s current standoff with Chicago-area teachers got a little creative with his signage this week by outing Rahm as a secret Nickelback fan, but the mayor’s spokeswoman Tarrah Cooper responded to area blog RedEye’s request for clarification with a single word: “No.”

We’ve yet to receive word on whether Mr. Emanuel sees Avril Lavigne as a real 1977-style punk or a manufactured teeny-pop poser.

UPDATE: The national debate has officially returned, as all semi-coherent conversations eventually must, to the late 90’s. The teacher responsible for the sign in question has now changed his message to accuse Emanuel of liking the world’s second least favorite band, Creed.

While Chick-fil-A already has one location in Chicago, Proco “Joe” Moreno, a member of the City Council, told the Chicago Tribune that he plans to prevent the franchise from building its second restaurant in his ward, saying, “If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don’t want you in the 1st Ward…Because of this man’s ignorance, I will now be denying Chick-fil-A’s permit to open a restaurant in the 1stWard.” He also said that Cathy’s comments were “bigoted, homophobic.”

Also, according to the Los Angeles Times, Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of the Windy City, released a statement that said, “Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values. They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents. This would be a bad investment, since it would be empty.”

It’s Dan Sinker, a professor at Columbia College and founder of CellStories.net, a site that publishes for mobile devices. He’s also founder of a now-defunct punk magazine, Punk Planet, which played a role in his tweets. The Atlantic has a lengthy post detailing his identity and background.

For the most part, it sounds like Sinker is a writer with a singular voice who lives in a city with a singular politician. We’ve talked about crisis comms responses plenty of times. It’s interesting to recognize that, profanity-laced and all, this wasn’t a crisis for the real Mayor Emanuel, and ultimately, his philanthropic response was the right one.

After his alter-ego became the most quotable guy on Twitter Thursday, Chicago mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel offered a cash donation to charity if the person behind the imposter account @MayorEmanuel would step forward and reveal himself after the election.

The Twitter hijacking added a new dimension to the mayoral debate Thursday, when the whole Twitterverse was privy to the innerworkings of “Emanuel’s” mind. And he was on fire!

Burton had been on the list of candidates to replace press secretary Robert Gibbs. The job eventually went to Jay Carney, who held his first press conference today. (More on that in a post to come.)

Sweeney was the chief of staff to former WH chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Both will leave the White House on Friday. Politico reports that both will play a role in the 2012 election cycle.

Along with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, press secretary Robert Gibbs, speechwriter Jon Favreau and communications director Dan Pfieffer all pulled in the highest salary of $172,200.00. Deputy press secretary Bill Burton gets $113,000.00 and deputy communications director Jen Psaki makes $150,000.00.

Sarah Feinberg will join Bloomberg LP next month as a director of the company’s communication and business strategy efforts. She will also help to lead Bloomberg’s D.C. expansion with the upcoming launch of BGov, which will take direct aim at publications such as Politico and The Hill.

Feinberg currently serves as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Prior to serving in the White House, Feinberg was the Communications Director at the House Democratic Caucus, the Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Press Secretary to former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle.

The White House dispatched top officials to the Sunday morning talk shows yesterday. The conversation continued around WH Communications Director Anita Dunn‘s remarks last week in which she said in part, “Fox News often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party…Let’s not pretend they’re a news network the way CNN is.”

Senior Adviser David Axelrod appeared on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” while White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was a guest on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Axelrod said of Fox News, “It’s not really news. It’s pushing a point of view. The bigger thing is that, other news organizations, like yours, ought not treat them that way…We’re going to appear on their shows, we’re going to participate.” TVNewser has video of both appearances.

The question for many is if “we’re going to appear on their shows” means President Obama or only administration officials. Obama’s last appearance on Fox News was a sitdown with Bill O’Reilly on September 4th, 2008.

The New York Times‘ media critic David Carr devoted his column this week to the subject and wrote, “People who work in political communications have pointed out that it is a principle of power dynamics to “punch up” – that is, to take on bigger foes, not smaller ones. A blog on the White House Web site that uses a “truth-o-meter” against a particular cable news network would not seem to qualify.”

One typically associates the role of White House media relations with the Press Secretary, and for this administration that man is Robert Gibbs. However, while Gibbs is sought after during his daily briefings and for on the record remarks, another prominent member of the administration, chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, is doing his fare share of media relations work, both on and off the record.

The Washington Post‘s Howard Kurtz writes: “Perhaps no White House chief of staff in modern history has worked the media as aggressively and relentlessly as Emanuel. Drawing on his long-standing relationships with journalists, Emanuel serves up on-the-record quotes, background spin and the sort of capital gossip that lubricates relationships. The former Chicago congressman also seeks their take on events and floats possible administration tactics.”

“A conversation with Rahm can be as little as 30 seconds…He calls, drops a few F-bombs, makes his point and hangs up,” CNN commentator Paul Begala told Kurtz. Said the NY Times‘ David Brooks, “With some people you just get the spin; he does go beyond that.”
