Today on Essence.com, there’s a “Street Style” photo gallery from the “Celebrate Black HERstory” event.

On Clutch, they pose this question: “Do we still need Black leaders?”

On The Root, they’re talking about Bobby and Whitney.

And on HuffPost Black Voices, there’s a story about an organization, the Black and Missing Foundation that’s focused on locating “missing people of color.”

As Michelle Flowers Welch, CEO and founder of Flowers Communications Group said in our Women Leaders profile yesterday, there’s been a dramatic increase in outreach to multicultural audiences, including African-American consumers. The examples above show the wide variety of issues that outlets targeting African Americans are tackling. We talked with a few experts to find out about some of the other trends and hot topics that are of interest.

In the second installment of our Women Leaders in PR series, we focus on Michelle Flowers Welch, the founder and CEO of Flowers Communications Group.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011, Flowers Communications Group has always focused on public relations and communications that target multicultural audiences. Today, tailoring PR efforts to reach a wide range of consumers and VIPs across varying demographics is becoming more and more commonplace. But when Flowers Communications Group was in its early days, that was not the case.

Roll Call: Dowd Joins Golin, Porsche Has a New PR GM, and More

Jim Dowd has joined GolinHarris as SVP of national media relations, reporting to New York MD Jennifer Cohan. He was previously a principal and MD of Middleberg Communications. Middleberg acquired Dowd’s firm, The Dowd Agency, in 2009.

Porsche Cars North America has appointed Steve Janisse as its PR GM, effective February 1. He will oversee media relations and PR, including product placements, internal comms and social media. Bernd Harling, the organization’s previous PR GM, will become principal communications counsel, a new position focused on raising awareness among key stakeholders in the company’s major markets. The press release announcing the changes includes a list of the company’s PR contacts.

Tracy McGraw has been named SVP of corporate communications at BET. She will be responsible for PR efforts and strategies behind the network’s series, specials. and  events. Prior to BET, McGraw was at VH1.
