That is a soundbite mediabistro.com community manager Seamus Condron may enjoy. It comes from Altimeter Group Partner, Customer Strategy Jeremiah Owyang.

Owyang told a packed crowd at the South by Southwest conference today that “social media doesn’t scale” and that the way to make it scale is to integrate social into customer relationship management, or CRM software, such as Salesforce.com.

Altimeter Group consults to long list of PR and marketing firms.

“You’ll never be able to respond fast enough,” said Owyang, in regards to people who like to “scream” their complaints on Twitter. Also worth noting: Altimeter recently released a free research report titled, “Social CRM: The New Rules of Relationship Management.”

While the job title “Community Manager” is relatively new, it has gained traction and is being adopted by more and more companies looking to their community as “an active participant in pretty much everything they do, from marketing initiatives to product development,” says mediabistro’s Community Manager Seamus Condron.

In this interview, Condron talks about the things all good community managers should be doing (“It’s a constant practice of listening, engaging, and experimenting with your users.”), what role Twitter plays in community management (“The beauty of Twitter is that its simplicity allows your channel to be able to accomplish multiple objectives.”) and which community managers are doing their jobs effectively (“Saul Colt is one of my favorites. He used to be “Head of Magic” at Freshbooks.”)

There are often misconceptions about what a community manager does. What are some of the biggest misconceptions that you come across?

MediaOnTwitter: The Ultimate Database?

mediatwitterimage.gif

The names says it all. Launched today, MediaOnTwitter claims to be “the first shareable media database available to Twitter users.” According to a press release, the tool is now “supercharged by the support of TrackVia and supported by HARO founder, Peter Shankman.” As PRNewser first reported in January, paid service Cision has added Twitter handles to their database as well.

PRNewser asked Shankman how he will be involved with the site, to which he replied, “I get about 200 journalists a day using HARO – [I] will work with them in the auto-confirm-reply to their queries to ask them to submit their twitter name if they have one to the list.”

Not everyone is impressed with the offering. Said mediabistro.com Community Manager Seamus Condron, “I’m all for a decent Twitter directory, but MediaOnTwitter is an ungodly mess. No search and a user experience nightmare.” Condron certainly has a point, but given the service is free, we think people are willing to cope – for now, at least.
