Solomon McCown & Company Preps Santa for Crisis Campaign

Last week we posted on our neighbor Coyne PR’s R-rated agency Christmas card, so here’s a quick one from our friends at Solomon McCown & Company of Boston.

The audience for this work consists of the firm’s clients, but we’re very interested in hearing more about S. Claus, he of the presents, snow and amazingly sentient reindeer who obviously do not have a proper union.

For the record, we’re glad that Solomon McCown avoided working with this nightmare client. Mr. Claus may get a lot of press coverage with little effort, but what’s his primary source of revenue?

We all know who really pays for those presents, don’t we?!

Sunshine Sachs Names Two New Partners

PrintFor only the second time in its 23-year history, Sunshine Sachs is expanding its leadership team by elevating two longtime employees to partner status.

Heather Lylis and Keleigh Thomas Morgan will join principals Shawn Sachs and Ken Sunshine as the firm’s third and fourth partners.

Morgan, who began working at the firm’s New York office in 2004 after roles at Nike Communications and Mirimax, previously held the title of senior vice president and ran the firm’s recent L.A. expansion. Lylis, a veteran of Solomon McCown & Company who has spent the past ten years with SS, “played a large role” in the 2013 opening of SS’s Washington, D.C. wing.

Is Reddit the New Reputation Management Tool?

Confession: we’re new to Reddit. We kind of saw it as a place where people gathered to argue over whether Game of Thrones needs to be more faithful to the books before we used it to scroll through theories about the Breaking Bad finale (it’s a “degrees of nerditude” issue). But this week our friends at Solomon McCown & Company posted a story on their blog asking whether PR needs to get more familiar with the site—and the answer is definitely “yes.”

Lots of people whose names you know have subjected themselves to “ask me anything” sessions, and now it’s almost a requirement. Some AMAs are fascinating (“I am a former Amish person that left home and joined the military“) while others are strictly for the fans (“I’m Dennis from Always Sunny“) and some are a little disappointing (Hi, President Obama).

The most relevant session happened this past weekend, when Yelp‘s CEO Jeremy Stoppelman ”stopped by”. As you might expect for a somewhat controversial company, most of the action involved Stoppelman defending his business and its practices. Key quote:

“There has never been any amount of money you could pay us to manipulate reviews.”

5 Steps in a Successful Social Media Damage Control Campaign

Not too far ahead though.

This week, Barilla’s “foot in mouth” move got lots of people talking about the right way to conduct a damage control campaign on social media. Yesterday we connected with Solomon McCown & Company president/crisis comms expert Ashley McCown to get her thoughts on the case and the challenge of planning and directing successful campaigns.

What’s your take on Barilla’s damage control efforts?

I don’t think the chairman of Barilla really cares. He issued an apology, but he also made it quite clear in his initial statement that if people don’t like what he says, they don’t have to buy his pasta. It was a muddled response and a hollow message without much emotion behind it and it did not clarify the matter. An apology has to be genuine, and his was not believable.

Also: the company is based in Italy, but their apology was only released in Italian on Facebook and Twitter at first, and that was a mistake. The U.S. is a significant market share for them, but they didn’t bother translating it—someone else did.

Research: U.S. Adults Feeling Recession’s Impact, But Optimistic About the American Dream

PR firm Solomon McCown & Company and Anderson Robbins Research partnered to poll 1,009 U.S. adults about their values and outlook on life, finding that the country has developed “A New Normal.”

According to the survey, 74 percent of Americans feel they have achieved the American Dream, but that realization takes a better work-life balance and overall happiness into greater account.

Podcast: Solomon McCown & Co CEO Travels to Israel on a ‘Mission’ With M.A. Gov. Deval Patrick

Recently, Helene Solomon, CEO of Boston-based PR firm Solomon McCown & Company, joined Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and a group of state business leaders on a trip to Israel, part of the Massachusetts Innovation Economy Partnership Mission 2011. The goal of the mission, which also went to the U.K., was to discuss the opportunities for businesses between Massachusetts and these two countries in areas like technology and life sciences.

Midterm Election Lessons for the PR Industry, from the Industry

Following the results of the midterm election on Tuesday, politicians on both sides came away with their ideas (good and/or bad) about what’s important to voters and how they should govern moving forward.
