Mike Tyson Stopped By the ‘Today’ Show and, As Expected, It Was Kind of Crazy

It was only yesterday that boxing’s former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson and the filmmaker Spike Lee were announcing the one-man show “Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth.” Just like that, they managed to snag an “exclusive” spot with Ann Curry this morning to talk it up on the Today show.

Soooo. Wow. Let’s start by saying that Ann Curry, a fantastic reporter, was probably not the best person to handle what Tyson was inevitably bringing to the set.

State Farm Clip To Benefit Firefighters Organization

State Farm enlisted the talents of Spike Lee for a clip commemorating 9/11 and the nation’s firefighters. About 150 children went to four New York City firehouses to sing the Jay Z/Alicia Keys song “Empire State of Mind” as a thank you to the city’s bravest. You can purchase this version of the song from iTunes with proceeds benefiting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Spike Lee does New York on film like no one else.

State Farm has a little blurb about the campaign on the bottom right of its homepage, but otherwise information about the program is available on the State Farm YouTube channel. The clip already has about 435,000 views.

Sports Stunts Mix Viral Video With Advertising

This new viral video from Pepsi (h/t to PR Daily) turned up on the Pepsi YouTube channel late last week (it’s already gotten more than 1.5 million views) with an invitation to viewers to check out the Diet Pepsi Facebook page for “more behind the scenes action” from Beckham’s advertising shoot for the soft drink. Clever way to drive traffic. And David Beckham is quoted saying that the stunt was real, so there’s the residual media coverage that also came with the clip.

The video follows in the footsteps of last year’s Gillette viral video starring tennis champ Roger Federer, who, while filming an ad for the company, smashed bottles off of the head of a crew member. Pepsi one-ups Gillette by actually having Beckham drink a Pepsi on-camera.

MSNBC’s New Tagline Speaks to the Brand

MSNBC is publicly announced its new tagline today: “Lean Forward.”  According to The New York Times, the new slogan “embraces its progressive political identity,” juxtaposing the number two cable news channel against Fox News Channel, which sits at number one. The tagline will also be part of a two-year advertising campaign to raise awareness about the channel.

The story goes on to say that MSNBC has had a decade-long issue distinguishing its brand before it “seized on antiwar, anti-Republican sentiments in the latter part of the Bush administration” with notable names like Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann. The cable news station still has some catching up to do, with awareness for CNN and Fox far above MSNBC.

“When you’re clear about who you are, you actually make money,” Sharon Otterman, the CMO for MSNBC told the Times.

Brooklyn BlogFest Brings Up Issues of Blogger Disclosure

absolut brooklyn.png

Absolut Vodka is facing scrutiny after it sponsored local blogger event Brooklyn Blogfest, which some attendees felt was overbearing.

For example, host Spike Lee said at the event, “This is to celebrate Absolut, so we’re not going to get into gentrification tonight.” Others felt the sponsorship didn’t follow proper disclosure.

Here is the short story: not unlike other social media marketing programs, Absolut offered bloggers involved with Brooklyn Blogfest a free Flip video camera and a bottle of Absolut Brooklyn, their new limited edition flavor, which the company promoted at the event via their Brooklyn Stoop Life campaign.

So what went wrong?
