How Has the Media Changed Since 9/11?

9-11-gallerySeptember 11, 2001 started off like any other day in the news. Morning shows were shutting it down for the day; assignment desk editors were changing shifts; general assignment reporters were preparing for news meetings.

And then the clock struck 8:46 a.m. eastern time.

From that second on, we know the horrifying details and remember the chilling visuals. Everyone in the world has a “Where were you then” story etched in his/her mind forever.

One other thing changed on that day: the media itself.

For the PRNewsers out there, here are a few ways that media — the way the news is reported, disseminated, and consumed — changed thirteen years ago.

Phil Roberston Ensures That Duck Dynasty Continues to Make Headlines

happy_happy_happy

Phil Robertson, the well-coiffed patriarch of the Duck Dynasty empire, has made quite the name for himself when it comes to bellowing his opinions about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. His latest opinions, shared with Sean Hannity on FOX News, may be his greatest hit yet.

Hannity’s discussion strayed from duck-calling accouterments to American foreign policy, because when you need a source for a nonsensical political diatribe, who better than a famously outspoken reality star? That’s when Robertson said this:

“In this case, you either have to convert them, which I think would be next to impossible,” Robertson explained to Hannity. “I’m just saying convert them or kill them — one or the other.”

And the Church said “Amen”?

Free(dom) Falling: Heavy security concerns with One World Trade Center

freedom tower

If only this chick could protect the Freedom Tower. I mean, she is staring at it.

The past few weeks haven’t been the easiest for the NYPD, the City of New York, and specifically, the “most heavily secure building in America,” One World Trade Center.

As what is believed to be the terrorist’s top target for evil, everyone in this country would consider this place to be guarded like Fort Knox (or even the government secrets the Kardashians have because they’re still out there for some dumb reason).

However, if you consider the litany of bad PR and astounding security breaches that have taken place recently at One World Trade Center, it would be easy to see how the idiot who tried to blow up his own stank boxer shorts on a plane could be successful at this hallowed site.

And now, we have a half-blind security guard … who was caught on video falling asleep on the job. Wait, what?!

Will Sochi Winter Olympics Win the ‘Worst PR Ever’ Medal?

Sochi 2014 Company OlympicsNow, before you answer that close-to-rhetorical question, this doesn’t involve Munich or Atlanta. That’s too easy and something that doesn’t involve jokey-jokes.

Back to the show: think about any Olympics (that doesn’t involve human tragedy). Summer or Winter. Name the Olympic Games that has been a bigger punching bag.

Berlin, 1936, was hosted by a sardonic, mustachioed fellow who wanted “his Olympics” to move forward under an Aryan mindset. And then Jesse Owens stuck a bat right up his behind. (Go ‘Merica!)

Mexico City, 1968, featured an iconic picture with Tommie Smith and John Carlos with the black-gloved ‘Power to the People’ salute following their first- and third-place win in the 200m dash respectively. Right on.

Moscow, 1980, the U.S. team weren’t allowed to go because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Wait, what? Seems we would like a do-over compared to public sentiment about that #$%& country, but anywho.

And then, there’s Sochi. President Putin, please take the stand as we rattle off your many terrible PR achievements…
