North Korean Archaeologists Re-Discover Ancient Unicorn’s Lair

Before we leave for the weekend we feel an obligation to share what is, without even the slightest doubt, the very best press release of the week (if not the year).

This one comes to us from the tragically, hilariously misnamed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and its news agency, KCNA (don’t even bother clicking on the link if you want to retain your sanity).

According to the amazing release we’ve captured via screenshot below, archaeologists representing the DPRK and its Very Important History Institute “have recently reconfirmed a lair of the unicorn rode by King Tongmyong, founder of the Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668).” Note the use of the word “reconfirmed”–it was there all along, but they just had to make sure.

Does it get better? Oh yes.

New York Times Public Editor Wins Social Media

Looks like The New York Times has finally decided to place both feet firmly in the 21st century.

The “paper of record” suffered a few days of bad PR this week thanks to a “walk out” organized by 375 unionized employees, but the newest member of the Times management team has received excellent marks: recently appointed public editor Margaret Sullivan.

How did she win media plaudits? By being bold: A perfect example may be the public smackdown she issued to “Talk” writer Andrew Goldman today for repeatedly asking female interview subjects whether they ever used sex to advance their careers.

As New York Magazine’s Joe Coscarelli notes, Sullivan’s predecessor Arthur Brisbane hesitated to join the digital world, arguing in an exit interview that the PE job “is not a conversation”. But his replacement clearly sees things in a different light. She posts on her “Public Editor’s Journal” blog nearly every day, encouraging debates over controversial issues like Jack Welch’s nutty number-fudging conspiracy theories and the Times’ continued use of the term “illegal immigrant” in the face of protests by advocacy groups and activists.

continued…

Revolving Door: CNN, ‘Harper’s Bazaar,’ YouTube, and More

CNN is revamping its morning programming, bringing Ashleigh Banfield and Soledad O’Brien into the line up. The morning will be broken into two shows, from 5a.m. to 7a.m. and 7a.m. to 9a.m. Daytime staffing is also undergoing a reorganization. [via TVNewser]

Harper’s Bazaar has launched a Brazilian edition with Maria Prata serving as EIC. It debuts with the November issue featuring Brazilian model Giselle Bündchen on the cover. Harper’s Bazaar is now published in 16 languages.

Competition is heating up for Middle East coverage, The New York Times says.

YouTube is launching 96 channels worth of original content that will feature celebs, sports, news, and more. Content partners will include Hearst, Ashton Kutcher, and The Wall Street Journal. You’ll start seeing the new video channels in November. Or will you? TechCrunch wonders aloud how the site plans to get viewers to tune in.

Every Day with Rachael Ray is now officially part of Meredith. The first issue under the Meredith name will be February 2012. Linda Fears, editorial director of Meredith Food Content and EIC of Family Circle will oversee EDWRR‘s content. And Christine Guilfoyle has rejoined the publication as publisher. [via Fishbowl NY]

More media moves after the jump.
