Why Do So Many Journalists Dislike PR?

This morning we came across a post on LinkedIn written by Account Executive Kim Cox of The Cline Group and titled “There’s a Reason Journalists Hate PRs.”

We were compelled — especially since the premise of the story was a reading of EZ-PR founder Ed Zitron‘s book This Is How You Pitch, which he also discussed with us two months ago.

The headline’s conflict is a problem to which we see no long-term “solution”. Cox’s point (and Zitron’s) is that each PR professional needs to develop something approaching a relationship with those on the other side of the media aisle rather than simply sending blind emails and wondering why no one ever replies.

But we all know this. And it’s not so simple, either: no matter how often the journalists Cox cited in her post talk badly about PR, we also see them going back and forth with smart reps on Twitter. And those are just the public interactions.

We reached out to Zitron, who had a few things to say and write.

Cohn & Wolfe announced two senior appointments to help drive growth and lead new accounts. David Henderson, who joins as SVP in Los Angeles, will oversee the US Communications business for Nokia, while Josh Levin, based in New York, joins as SVP and Co-Lead of the US Corporate Practice. Veteran public relations specialist Joanne Forster has signed on as general manager and PR director of Bolt PR, Irvine. As general manager, Forster will be responsible for managing day-to-day company operations, overseeing all Bolt accounts, mentoring staff, and driving new business development initiatives. The most significant accomplishment of Forster’s career was “Force of Nature Concert for Tsunami Aid,” which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Forster co-produced and directed all domestic and international marketing efforts for the multi-artist concert, which raised over eight million dollars and made news headlines around the world. Roll Call: Microsoft, Alcoa, Lane PR, and More

Microsoft has a new SVP of consumer channels and the Central Marketing Group: Chris Capossela. Capossela replaces Mich Mathews, who announced last week that she would be stepping down. Capossela was previously the SVP of the Office division, which houses Office, SharePoint, and other product lines. In this role, he also oversaw the launches of Office 2007 and 2010. [via TechCrunch]

Dina Shapiro has been named director of marcomms and branding at Alcoa. She will lead marketing strategy across the country and around the world. She was most recently the SVP of brand strategy at Citibank. Shapiro has 18 years of marketing experience including work with advertising firms JWT and BBDO.
