Loews Regency Hotel in New York City chose the Susan Magrino Agency as its PR AOR in anticipation of a January 2014 re-opening following a top-down $100 million renovation.

While we have no idea what the new facade will look like, the chef at Loews Regency’s as-yet-unnammed “concept” restaurant will be Dan Silverman, formerly of the Standard Grill in the André Balazs hotel of the same name. (And yes, we’re already salivating.)

Susan Magrino also landed interior design firm Meyer Davis Studios and Hammacher Schlemmer, a mail order gift company that claims to be America’s oldest catalog publisher, sells products like “the authentic 1966 Batmobile”, and resembles a Bizarro World cross between Brookstone and the J. Peterman catalog (it’s real, and it’s spectacular).

This may well be true, but someone still has to enlighten the public about doing it safely and pleasurably—and for “sexual wellbeing brand” Durex in the Americas that someone will be Porter Novelli.

Novelli already works with several brands belonging to Durex parent company Reckitt Benckiser, and they earned this account by helping the brand expand in China (no mean feat) via social media, event planning, the annual global sex survey, and a “normalization” campaign to help aid the launch of a new sex toy line. We hope they were also responsible for Photoshopping a condom into Chinese president Xi Jinping’s pocket, because that’s some viral marketing we can support:

Toyota Shifts AOR Gears…

SHIFT Communications announced that Toyota has selected the award-winning firm as its primary PR agency in the Northeast Region, which includes New York, New England, Washington, D.C., and the mid-Atlantic states. The firm will also play a lead role in strategic planning for the brand, driving earned media with mainstream and social media outlets, and highlighting the motor company’s philanthropic and community relations programs.

“Toyota is a brand with deep roots in innovation,” said Todd Defren, CEO of SHIFT Communications. “That forward-thinking mindset is incredibly synergistic with SHIFT’s approach and we look forward to working closely with the team at Toyota to bring that same level of innovation to its communications.”

Two for One AOR…

The Morris + King Company announced that it has been retained by Arby’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger in America. Over the past 25 years, Arby’s Foundation has donated over $52 million to various charitable causes across the country. Their recent partnership with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign is working to bring meals to more American children than ever before.

Ogilvy has been chosen as AOR for NASCAR, which aims to extend its brand into a more diversified and younger demographic. After a four-month pitch process, Ogilvy edged out the competition and will initiate the brand extension at the Daytona 500 in February 2013, the race’s 55th anniversary.

The climate in the industry remains highly competitive. Ogilvy’s chairman-CEO for North America explained why landing NASCAR signals an important acquisition for the company. “We firmly believe that Nascar is a valuable tool in the marketing mix and a place where big brands get high return on investment. We couldn’t be more proud to add the sport to our portfolio of global brands.” [via]

It’s all about moms. 9 Story Entertainment has selected Child’s Play Communications to lead an outreach campaign leveraging social media and the power of moms. The effort aims to promote the animated TV series Almost Naked Animals and related new lines of licensed products. To increase brand awareness Child’s Play will also partner with parenting publications in the US.

Vince Commisso, president and CEO of 9 Story Entertainment said, “We know the broad family appeal of Almost Naked Animals will resonate with moms, and the lovable characters make for fun product extensions. The Morris + King Company has added tracx to its roster of clients. As AOR to the social media campaign service provider, MKC will work on a PR program targeting the business and tech communities.

The SLS Hotel South Beach, opening in the spring of this year, has chosen Bullfrog & Baum for PR services related to its food and beverage offerings.

PR and marketing firm Alpaytac has added Turkish Airlines to its roster of clients. The firm will lead the PR efforts targeting audiences in the airline’s four U.S. gateway cities: Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York.

GolinHarris has added two new clients to its roster out West. BillFloat, a financial service company that helps consumers who are having trouble paying their bills, has chosen GH as its AOR. The firm will provide consumer and trade media outreach and help in the public affairs area. And Southern California’s University of Redlands has chosen the firm for media outreach (national and regional). Both accounts will be handled out of GH’s Orange County office.

Unruly, a video advertising company that works across YouTube, Facebook, and other social networks, has chosen The Morris + King Company as AOR. The firm will work on an integrated PR campaign.

Shorty Awards Are Open For Entries

Last night, the Shorty Awards, the annual honoring of the best and brightest in 140 characters, hosted a cocktail party where they announced the opening of the industry awards for entries. Among the categories: Best Use of Social Media in Real Life (“IRL”), Best Use of a Hashtag on Twitter, and a few new categories, like Best Social Media Manager.

The marketing jury, which judges the industry awards has also doubled in size. Among those on the list are Stephanie Agresta, Weber Shandwick‘s EVP, MD of social media; Andy Morris, founding partner at The Morris King & Company; and Ian Schafer, CEO of Deep Focus.

This is the fourth year for the awards.
