Companies Besides Facebook Getting PR from ‘The Social Network’

For weeks leading up to the premiere of The Social Network on Friday, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook, Aaron Sorkin, Jesse Eisenberg, and everyone else who touches the movie or the social media site have dominated a big chunk of news coverage. Charleston, SC-based digital advertising agency Levelwing decided to piggyback the premiere by hosting its own VIP event in Charleston.

The agency, seeking to highlight its own digital prowess, invited 90 business leaders and other locals like Ayoka Lucas from Charleston Magazine and Noah Everett, founder of Twitpic to their event. The firm interviewed guests for YouTube video, posted photos on Facebook, created a #VIPmovie hashtag on Twitter, and gave guests a QR code that took them to a white paper as well as info about the after party.

After the jump, video from the event.

‘The Social Network’ Screenings Add to Pre-Opening Frenzy

For the past couple of weeks, it’s been impossible to boot up your computer without tripping over half a dozen stories about The Social Network. (I guess you can add PRNewser to the list of media contributing to the hoopla.)

The pre-release buzz was also facilitated by an outreach campaign by Sony Pictures, which set up 350 screenings and stopped at 25 college campuses nationwide to build interest in the movie.

“We also showed it to people who would be obviously interested in the subject, entrepreneurship, and innovation. We showed it at business schools, hedge funds, anyone involved in the financial business,” one of the film’s producers, Sony Pictures‘ Scott Rudin, told the New York Times.

The studio also worked with Mashable and the organization Girls in Tech for screenings. Members of the tech community have been particularly open about their skepticism and/or indifference to the film, with The Daily Beast publishing a story today about the film’s frenzy-free zone, Silicon Valley.

“When we first heard about The Social Network, I thought it was a ridiculous idea. But it’s come together,” Mashable’s editor-in-chief Adam Ostrow tells the Times.

The movie opens in theaters today. Good luck getting a ticket if you haven’t already.

Facebook’s Sandberg Talks Privacy, ‘The Social Network,’ and More During Ad Week

Photo: Nancy Lazarus

The growing role of social media versus websites, openness versus privacy, community giving, and the new movie The Social Network were among the topics covered when Arianna Huffington interviewed Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO, during day three of Advertising Week at a Huffington Post event on social media.

For marketers to reach their audience, Sandberg said, “Now people are spending more time on social media and less time than they once did on websites. More marketers now are tying their campaigns to social media since that is where their customers are.” She said that the personalized nature of social media was also a factor driving its popularity. continued…
