Fox News’ Massive New Touch Screens Aren’t Helping, You Guys

When we first saw images of Fox News‘ new, comically outsized touchscreen doohickeys, we thought “What a great way to counteract the perception that you’re a network catering to senior citizens frightened by technological, cultural and political change!” But it was probably more about intra-network jousting, like “We’ll see your fake holograms and raise you two dozen supersized iPads, CNN!”

Then we watched this Shep Smith video, which we can summarize as such: “These things are really freaking cool. Just trust us like you always have and will.”

For real though: Fox’s tech “revolution” involves little more than testing its theory that more gadgets equals more accurate news. Imagine how much smoother the 2012 election coverage would have been with these BATs (Big Area Touchscreens)! And who would ever make fun of a name like that?

We would ask various members of The Media what they think, and yesterday people who are more clever than us came up with plenty of related memes, but this is the only tweet you need to see:

Paul Reubens, tech visionary. And to all those who doubt him, Shep Smith has one question: “Have you watched the True Blood on a 55-incher?!”

Fox News Chief Roger Ailes Cans Top PR Rep

Today The Hollywood Reporter brought word that Fox News chief Roger Ailes had given “right hand [PR] man” Brian Lewis his walking papers. That’s not all: the THR headline asserts that he was “…escorted from the Fox News building” this morning. Kind of an unnecessary detail, but we get the point.

Lewis worked as “a top executive” to Ailes since the network began 17 years ago. His latest official title was VP, corporate communications, a role that required him to manage PR duties for all the Fox properties. “Insiders” claim that “financial issues” forced Ailes to make the decision while some media observers think this move portends a bigger shakeup (especially when paired with the recent re-shuffling of on-air personalities Sean Hannity, Megyn Kelly and Shep Smith).

We don’t know about all that, and we’re absolutely sure that Mr. Ailes would never turn to us for advice, but we think he might want to consider Shep as a replacement for Lewis. The world’s biggest True Blood fan might not be a PR pro, but he’s certainly not afraid to let everyone know how he feels about that “V.”

More Brands That Jumped on the Avatar Bandwagon (or Should Have)

Yesterday we posted on Bud Light‘s well-timed decision to offer Facebook fans its own variation on the very viral Human Rights Campaign marriage equality avatar. Now we’d like to showcase some other examples of brands that were, if not quite “bold”, at least attuned to news trends — and the interests of their target audiences. Here are some more branded variations on the avatar:

Equal artificial sweetener: We can’t confirm that the brand itself created this one, but if they didn’t then they certainly missed out on a great opportunity.

Emmy Nominees, Actors Who Were Snubbed, Win Big Buzz

Today was a great day for those who were nominated for an Emmy award. But it’s actually a pretty darn good day for the actors and actresses who end up on the countless lists of those who were snubbed.

Over the past hours, these overlooked actors and their shows are getting high praise from reporters nationwide, landing story after story about how great they are and how dumb the Emmy committee is.

Among today’s PR Buzz Winners are True Blood and one of its lead vampires Alexander Skarsgard (above); Glee‘s Lea Michele and Cory Monteith; zombie thriller The Walking Dead (when is that coming back BTW?!); and Nick Offerman from the comedy Parks and Recreation.

Congrats to today’s winners. It’s likely these folks will all be winners again around September 18, when entertainment reporters, digging into the corners of every Emmy angle, will rehash their lists of who should’ve been nominated.

Meet the Vampire Publicist

Michelle Belanger loves True Blood because she can relate to it. She’s the publicist for the vampire community, a job akin to the Nan Flanagan character on the HBO program. In the clip above, she describes her job, saying she’s “the media face” who reassures people that vampires will not “eat your babies.” Sounds like a client you don’t want to piss off.
