Tutors Spellcheck Graffiti in Unique tumblr Campaign

You know, we really don’t care whether this promo campaign qualifies as PR or marketing. It’s just really cool. The UK-based Arc firm (part of the Leo Burnett Group) came up with a unique way to promote online tutoring company The Tutor Crowd: create a tumblr page all about spellchecking London street graffiti! Here are some samples:

The idea is that parents will see the stickers around town and get the impression that The Tutor Crowd is a little hipper (and therefore more effective) than other educational services companies. There’s more on the page itself (warning: some of the language in the original tags is NSFW). We wish we’d come up with this one.

20 Brands with the World’s Most Loyal Facebook Fans

We think you’ll agree: research on the influence of Facebook brand pages is confusing (to say the least).

Following reports of “Facebook fatigue” and a news that members of the all-important Millennial demographic spend more time on Tumblr comes a study proclaiming that the same 18-29 set doesn’t find Facebook brand pages “credible” and tends to avoid or ignore even the ones they “like.”

What to make of it all? Well, this week also brings us a Louddoor study revealing the twenty brands with the “most loyal” Facebook fans. We thought we’d check out the top twenty pages and highlight posts demonstrating why their fans are so much more engaged. Here goes:

These pages may not have the most fans, but they do have the most engaged fans–because they’ve all catered to their audiences very successfully. What do we think?

PR Win: BMW Designs 4-Year-Old’s 19-Engine Dream Car

One look at the photo of the over-the-top vehicle at left, and you might think, “Whoa. Was that designed by a car-crazed kid, or something?” Why yes, yes it was – a four-year-old named Eli, to be precise.

The one-of-a-kind design features 19 engines, 42 wheels, three steering wheels (to be controlled by three different drivers simultaneously) and, of course, a large trunk dedicated solely to transporting toys.

So how did this epically equipped piece of machinery make it from the brain of a toddler to a detailed BMW design? Like so many other magical things in childhood, all it took was a kid’s limitless imagination–and a particularly cool, dedicated adult invested in encouraging that creativity–to get things moving. It all started when Eli’s uncle posted on car enthusiast website Jalopnik:

How Will ‘Facebook Fatigue’ Affect Social Media Strategy for 2013?

We’d like to interrupt your anxious scramble to master social media with some intriguing stats from a recent Pew Internet study on the very real “Facebook fatigue” phenomenon:

8% of people with Internet access who don’t have Facebook accounts are interested in signing up, but…

20% of those who don’t have profiles now once did, and…

60% of members have taken a “voluntary break” lasting several weeks or more

There are several ways to read these numbers, but the big point is: Many Facebook users are starting to re-think exactly what the site means to them, and while traffic and membership stats remain huge, very few members are spending more time on Facebook now than in the past.

The killer for PR/marketing pros: the only users who have increased their Facebook engagement levels are older adults. Young folk aged 13-25 are more interested in Tumblr.

We don’t mean to start yet another conversation about whether Facebook has plateaued, but one question is worth asking: has it lost value as a PR/marketing venue?

continued…

Can Fohr Card Help Link Fashion Brands with Top Bloggers?

Fashion publicists and bloggers take note: a new startup called Fohr Card promises to make the process of connecting your brand to the most relevant digital tastemakers a whole lot easier. The company, founded by a PR girl, a photographer and a fashion director, calls itself “the first verified fashion blogger directory” and serves as a sort of digital Rolodex for publicists who toil in the worlds of clothing, beauty and related photography.

How does it work? Well, the company began with a database of “statistics, detailed information and background” on about 1,000 prominent fashion bloggers like top Tumblr Eva Chen, Shine by Three and the amazingly titled How to Talk to Girls at Parties.

Each profile includes traffic stats and interaction data to let promoters know how popular a given writer is and how likely he/she is to engage with publicists (along with contact and pitching information). Oh yeah: bloggers must apply and be “vetted” if they want to join the list.

The platform could also help hungry brands promote themselves: partners include Kate Spade, Oscar de la Renta, Lucky Magazine and more.

We’re not incredibly familiar with the glam biz, so let us know: how valuable could this resource be? Would the model work in other industries as well?

How Marvel Comics Rules Social Media

Marvel Comics is a massive brand. Its success relies on a stable of characters created over decades, and thanks to its film franchises it shows no signs of slowing down.

So what can everyday companies learn from Marvel’s hyperactive social media presence? Quite a bit!

The big lesson: constant engagement. We don’t want to stereotype here, but comic book fans are some of the most outspoken and devoted “brand advocates” around, and they demand both respect and responses to their queries. For some examples, check out the Twitter feed of Ryan Penagos, executive editorial director of Marvel’s digital division. It includes a lot of substantive information about upcoming properties as well as tiny little tidbits like this one:

Watching writers/producers @motancharoen, @jedwhedon & Joss Whedon react to #SHIELD as it’s being filmed is pretty rad.

— Ryan Penagos (@AgentM) January 23, 2013

Oh, and he has a Tumblr too.

Figuring Out Where to Pitch Your Stories

This week brings another helpful post from our friends at Muck Rack: This one is all about how to figure out which magazines and blogs will be most receptive to your pitches (we know from experience how difficult the process can be).

The individual mentioned in the post was recently involved in user testing sessions for the product he needs to promote, so the following list of tips is especially relevant to brands with upcoming product testing sessions–but it could also apply to those with established customer/fanbases. You know, the kind of brand loyalists who wouldn’t mind having you contact them for input.

Essentially, the tips boil down to figuring out which publications the members of your target audience read most often. This may involve contacting said audience members directly—but that’s usually less stressful than the pitch process, right? The steps:

Was it the Google/YouTube election page, complete with live results, surveys, insights and voter info?

Was it Twitter’s not-all-that-special #election2012 page?

Was it Facebook’s American politics page and Polling Location Search Tool app?

‘Binders Full of Women’ Is a Thing Now (Updated)

Well that didn’t take long, did it?

We’re not going to spend too much time analyzing or fact-checking last night’s debate; you’ll already read more than enough of that business today if you so much as glance at any news feed.

We’re more interested in the meme that emerged, with stunning speed, right before 10 last night–call it Big Bird 2.0 if you must (please don’t). Let’s put it this way: Well before the end of the Hofstra rumble, someone created the “Binders Full of Women” tumblr based on this well-meaning but poorly executed Mitt Romney quip:

“I went to a number of women’s groups and said, ‘Can you help us find folks?’” said Romney. “And they brought us whole binders full of women!”

This was Romney’s attempt to boost his standing among female voters by explaining the actions he took back in the day upon realizing that, when he was Governor of Massachusetts, his cabinet didn’t include many women. It was…awkward. continued…

Captain Picard Hates Time Warner Cable Too

Set phasers to annoyed (we know, we know)! Classic British theater vet Sir Patrick Stewart–best known for his appearance on that one episode of “Frasier” where his character thinks Frasier is gay and Frasier goes along with it because he desperately wants to hang out with the director of the Seattle Opera–has something in common with every other member of the Western world: He doesn’t much care for Time Warner Cable’s customer service!

Stewart has been blowing up the Internet lately. His recent move to Brooklyn’s favorite baby-making factory, Park Slope, inspired a hilarious Tumblr page, and this week he used his Twitter feed to express his frustration in seeking help with his new Time Warner Cable account and hearing…crickets!

Stewart tweeted “All I wanted to do was set up a new account with <s>@</s>TWCable_NYC but 36hrs later I’ve lost the will to live” before engaging in a fruitless back-and-forth with Time Warner’s Twitter representative. We like this guy–and, given the fact that his message was favorited nearly 300 times and re-tweeted more than 600 times, we hope Time Warner got the message!

We did have a larger point, though: continued…

Hillary Clinton Doesn’t Care Whether You Like Her Outfit

OK, we know we live in an era characterized by bad-faith political polarization that borders on complete inertia, but we still feel like we can reach agreement on one point: Hillary Clinton does not mess around.

In the wake of the viral tumblr hit Texts from Hillary, serious journalists like ourselves have sought new ways to make light of the fact that the Secretary of State is kind of a badass–and the Boston Review found a good one this week with a saucy excerpt from a two-year old interview with a couple of clueless talk show hosts in Kyrgyzstan: continued…

Progressive Update: No Mo Flo?

Hey, how is Progressive Insurance dealing with their ongoing PR imbroglio? If you guessed “running around like a headless chicken”, then you just might be correct!

According to Business Insider, the company’s current state of (justifiable) panic may well lead them to send their favorite spokeswoman Flo on an extended vacation.

Well, somebody needs to do something—and fast. Progressive’s PR outlook hasn’t gotten any better since we first ran the story earlier this week. Matt Fisher, the comedian who first brought the controversy into the spotlight with his harrowing tale of legal battles in the wake of his sister’s tragic death, took to Tumblr yesterday to refute Progressive’s universally panned response to his initial post (not a great idea to enable comments on that company blog, by the way). Fisher insisted that Progressive’s in-house lawyer did in fact serve as counsel for the “underinsured” driver who caused the fatal accident–despite contrary claims from the company.

Wow. Tough to spin this one. continued…

Progressive Responds to Controversy, Still Looks Very Bad

We aren’t privy to all the sad details of the growing Progressive Insurance PR scandal, but we can give you the basics as reported so far:

Progressive customer Kaitlyn Fisher died in a tragic 2010 collision

The other driver was ruled responsible; his insurance provider immediately settled for a very small sum in keeping with his policy

Because the other driver was “underinsured,” a special clause in Kaitlyn’s policy required that Progressive also pay the difference between his total and hers

Progressive refused to pay the full total due to Kaitlyn’s estate, forcing her family to take legal action (recent graduate Kaitlyn had considerable student loans due at the time of her death)

Under Maryland law, the Fisher family could not sue Progressive directly; their only option was to sue the responsible driver and then use the judgment as leverage against the company

The driver was deemed negligent; during the trial, he was represented by Progressive’s own lawyer.

Sounds like a big headache, huh? It gets worse: continued…

Is Tumblr the Next Twitter?

If 140 characters isn’t enough room for all the insightful things you have to say, then maybe you’re ready for Tumblr.

The New York Times goes into detail about the attributes of the blogging service, which includes the ability to go on for more than 140 characters, the addition of photos and other content, and its ease of use. For smartphones, there’s also Posterous. The Atlantic and John Mayer are among Tumblr’s users so far.

Twitter‘s appeal is the ability to provide a quick update in real-time, so it seems Tumblr isn’t really an alternative. But the company says it’s getting 30,000 new users per day, so there’s some appeal and perhaps some new publicity uses. If you’re on Tumblr or have any feedback, please share in the comments.
