Industry professionals know that dishonesty is the most direct route to bad PR. People don’t like being lied to by other people even if they are oddball strangers on the subway, so the public certainly doesn’t appreciate being lied to by companies, personalities, brands and universities that they support with their hard-earned money–especially those touted as “experts” in their given fields.

With rising tuition costs and a dwindling ability to guarantee graduates employment, colleges and universities are fighting more vehemently than ever to retain the elevated status they have enjoyed in our culture over the centuries. So we were disheartened to read the Washington Post article that included this comment regarding the matter from Terry W. Hartle, senior vice president at the American Council on Education: “In any highly competitive environment, there is always a temptation to cut corners.”

New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media.

The gig is right there at number 51 on the list of “The 100 Best Jobs” in America, stuck between “construction manager” and “middle school teacher”. We like the magazine’s flattering description of the position and its relatively generous average salary estimate, but the list leaves us with some questions:

• How can teaching middle school be a pleasant thing in any way (and why isn’t the median salary much higher)?
• What’s so great about dentistry, anyway?
• Who told marketing managers that they were so special?
• How is architect so low on the list (#70)? Someone call Art Vandelay!
• Do we really have to move to D.C., San Francisco or San Jose? (Please say no.)

U.S. News created the list by ranking individual positions based on “the number of openings, the chance to advance and be professionally fulfilled, and the ability to meet financial obligations”. What do we think, PR pros: why aren’t we #1? And how will we plan our revenge on the health care industry?

According to the profile of the profession, “The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects public relations specialists employment growth of 22.5 percent between 2010 and 2020. During that time period, an additional 58,200 jobs will need to be filled.” The median annual wage is listed at $52,090.

The article does point out that there are some stresses associated with the job, which we’ve written about here and here. But the prospects for the job — the article points out the wide range of industries one can work in (from politics to tech), the content creating, and social media work involved — make it look enticing on paper. PR Specialist is actually ranked number one for creative service jobs ahead of architect and artist/designer.

Also on this list of best jobs is event planner, which comes in at number one for the best jobs in business.
