Pink Slip Mania: This Is (Now) CNN

CNN fail

Unfortunately for Turner Broadcasting Systems, ratings haven’t been kind to the network that invented — for better or worse — 24/7 news.

In fact, they have sucked a little. This consistent downward spiral has forced the muckety-mucks at Turner (parent company of CNN, HLN, TNT, TBS, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and others) to consider what many in media believe to be the inevitable.

Reports show up to 300 have been let go at CNN and HLN alone, and this afternoon our sister site TVNewser learned that the recently relaunched Crossfire had been put out of its misery (again).

Factoids on the dearly departed after the jump. Read more

The Future of Las Vegas No Longer Involves Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh

delivering-happinessYou may not know his name, but you certainly know his company.

Many big businesses and top entrepreneurs place Zappos and its CEO Tony Hsieh, pronounced Shay, on the Mount Rushmore of “Best Service-Minded Companies in the Country” (arguably occupying a space next to The Container Store, Southwest Airlines, Chick-Fil-A, and Trader Joe’s).

Aside from making every person feel extremely special, he is very passionate about building businesses. This is why he took on the “Downtown Project” in Las Vegas to become an entrepreneur incubator. The project was a $350 million attempt by Hsieh and others to transform 60 acres of Downtown Las Vegas into a growing tech city.

Admirable. If only it had worked.

John Boehner: ‘Unemployed People…Don’t Think They Have to Work’

boehnerIf you ever had any doubt that the primary job of our current and future Congress is to look out for the little guy, may we present exhibit A: U.S. Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH).

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. unemployment rate is 6.2 percent, which amounts to 51 million people currently out of work and unable to support themselves. No one except those 51 million individuals knows how they landed in such an unfortunate predicament, and the reasons are legion: cutbacks, loss of revenue, unpleasant bosses…the point is that people are out of work.

Yet Speaker Boehner seem to have access to insights unavailable to the rest of us mere mortals: last week, he told a crowd at a conservative think tank that unemployed Americans just don’t want to work; they’d rather “just sit around.”

Remember that this man has a driver, a government salary, and a book deal.

U.S. Veteran Claims Cracker Barrel Fired Him for Giving Needy Man a Corn Muffin

cracker barrel pic stitch

Meet Joseph Koblenzer.

He is a 73-year-old man, former war veteran, and now standing in the unemployment due to the actions of Cracker Barrel. What actions? According to CBS Tampa Bay, Koblenzer was a man with a heart for the needy.

In fact, it was the appearance of a needy man and woman (on separate occasions) who cost him a nice job as a three-year greeter of said folksy eatery. His deviant act of thievery? A corn muffin, packets of mayonnaise and tartar sauce, coffee, and a coke and a smile.

Yeah, we hate him too.

The Weather Channel vs. DirecTV Battle Just Got Morbid (So to Speak)

dont-control-the-weather

So, this is still going strong…

Earlier this month, we discussed the fiscal fisticuffs involved between DirecTV and The Weather Channel because rates and Jim Cantore is just so cute (knees to his fans’ nuts and all). Just saying ‘Hi,’ I suppose.

The Weather Channel basically claimed DirecTV was extorting their professional meteorology and DirecTV essentially said The Weather Channel wasn’t all that. To wit, DirecTV placed the upstart (and slightly reminiscent of a news station in Des Moines, Iowa) WeatherNation in its place.

While this tete-a-tete hasn’t been the most friendly of debates, things just got a little awesomer as we discovered that the social media department at America’s beloved come-shine-come-rain network sucks out loud at social media.

#PRFail: Safeway Suspends Worker on his Last Day of Employment

Yamamoto-Video-Header

While we were out last year getting prepared for tomfoolery and New Years Eve shenanigans, there were a few (former) Dominick’s grocery store employees were sprucing up their resumes. According to the Chicago Sun-Timesthe Safeway-owned grocer came to the conclusion right before New Years that its 72 stores in the greater Chicagoland area were the “lowest-performing of Safeway’s business division.”

So, Safeway fired 6,600 people. Happy @$%&’n New Year, folks. While that’s sad, Safeway and Dominick’s forgot that some employees may get miffed about such a thing. And this time, the minions got the last laugh while Safeway ended up with mud smeared in its face. Click on the jump for the clean up on Aisle 9.

STUDY: How Much Money Would Santa Claus Make?

Santa Money

How much would this guy earn? Here’s a hint: Lo-Lo-Lo

This economy sucks. First, layaway shoppers have to stress about getting their kids’ gifts in time, unless the appropriately dubbed “Layaway Santa” shows up on his Mercedes sleigh. The price of gas is still north of $3 a gallon promising to never return to pre-apocalypse affordable rates. And now, thanks to this comprehensive study we read in CNBC, Santa is straight-up getting hosed on his salary at the North Pole!

Before the jump: Parents, you’re welcome. Now you have an out why little Johnny didn’t get that ridiculously priced XBOX ONE. Because Santa can’t afford the damn gas.

Martha Stewart Takes ‘Home for the Holidays’ Literally for Her Staff

No joke. Her staff thinks she is something that rhymes with "wish." What a ho-ho-ho.

No joke. Her staff thinks she is something that rhymes with “wish.” What a ho-ho-ho.

Martha Stewart, the friend of the housewife and arch-nemesis of the blogger, is now endearing herself to another group of people — her own staff. Just in time for the holidays, Martha Stewart decided now would be a great time to place a fat pink slip in the stocking of her employees.

Yes, according to the New York Postshe fired them this close to Christmas. Now before you go off wanting to stick a Yuletide log in her grill and pray to Santa that she chokes on her craft supplies, let’s hear the woman out. She may have a rational explanation for this. Maybe.  Read more

Yahoo Says PR Is Replacing Journalists. Wait, What?

PR + mediaMost journalists are highly skilled at what they do — research, reporting, writing and telling an intriguing story to the public. They represent both sides of a story without bias. They are able to see angles to a story that help educate and inform in a tangible way. Some went to school for journalism. Others went to school for English.

In short, they all know what they are doing and how do it.

So, how strange would it be if PR took over the news world? Very. According to Yahoo! Education, there are five jobs “nearing extinction” due to a combination of outlying reasons and other professions that “will take [their] place.”

Yep, you guessed it. And you can probably guess how we feel about it too. More after the jump…
