PR Lessons Learned from UVA’s Grief Trajectory

As with any major loss, PR disasters are followed by their own stages of grief: Exasperation, Investigation, Supplication, Cynicism, Reservation, and Speculation. Just ask the University of Virginia. You’ll recall, the president of that school, Teresa Sullivan, was forced to resign amid concerns about tuition, curriculum, and other issues facing colleges and universities across the nation. The secretive way the situation was handled raised many eyebrows.

The ouster and then reinstatement of UVA’s president has become a PR training manual on public relations meltdowns. Nevertheless, for UVA, the healing process has begun, and the time is right for an analysis of just what happened from a PR standpoint.

PR Challenges Test UVA, Higher Education

The struggling economy has consumers questioning the value of everything that costs money, from laundry detergent and motorcycle tires to bottled ketchup and college credits. As college tuitions continue to increase, saddling graduates with tremendous amounts of debt in an economy that offers limited employment opportunities, students and their families are questioning the true value of a college education. And so are universities.

Take the University of Virginia, for instance, which is experiencing something of an identity crisis. The resignation of president Teresa Sullivan created an outcry from faculty, alumni and students who believe she was unfairly coerced into leaving her coveted position by a Board of Visitors driven by financial motives. It’s become a battle over academic values, transparency, power, and the future of a hallowed institution that as of August 16 will be under the helm of Carl Zeithaml, dean of the university’s McIntire School of Commerce.

Zeithaml specializes in “strategic management with an emphasis on global and competitive strategy.” Perhaps a strategic global perspective is a quality that UVA is looking for in a permanent president. Maybe it’s one that all universities should seek. Read more

Roll Call: Carmichael Lynch Spong, UVA, StyleCaster, Groupon and More

Lori Robinson will join Carmichael Lynch Spong effective April 4 as senior principal and director of the New York office. Robinson will be responsible for client oversight, marketing, operations, staffing, and business development. She’ll report to firm MD Julie Batliner. Prior to this move, she was SVP, director of marketing and business development at Hill & Knowlton.

Liz Engel has joined Glover Park Group as MD in the government affairs practice. Engel was most recently deputy assistant secretary for legislation at the Department of Health and Human Services, working with the HHS and members of Congress on issues including Medicare. She also served on the President Obama‘s transition team.

Scott Miller joins the University of Virginia College and Graduate School of Arts and Science as director of communications overseeing development, communications strategy, and working with the public affairs office on the College’s messaging. Miller was formerly VP of comms at Time Warner and spent 13 years as a member of the company’s senior communications team.
