B-M China Launches Digital Practice

Burson-Marsteller China has launched D/BM, a digital and social media influencer practice. Zaheer Nooruddin, the firm’s lead digital strategist for Greater China, will lead the new practice.

The practice will provide online engagement and digital strategies, measurement and monitoring services, and identify influencers.

We spoke with Vibrant‘s Jonathan Gardner about digital trends across Asia. Gardner has lived and worked in the region, and recently paid a visit (just for fun). Check out some of that info here.

Interview with Vibrant’s Gardner: Trends in the Asian Market

Recently, we spoke with Vibrant‘s director of communications Jonathan Gardner, who took a trip to Thailand and Taiwan and shared with us some of the trends he noticed while he was there. Gardner worked in Asia between 2001 and 2009 and has held positions with Hill & Knowlton in Hong Kong, Edelman in Taiwan (he was an MD there), and worked at media organizations in those countries as well as Bangkok, Thailand.

During our conversation, Gardner talked about the importance of social media and the impact that the concept of “guanxi,” a term loosely translated to mean “relationships,” is having. And Gardner talked about the impact that the earthquake and tsunami in Japan is having on other parts of the region.

“In certain markets, including Taiwan and Thailand, Japanese pop culture, Japanese consumer electronics, Japanese food, all of these things have huge brand equity and have always been very popular,” he said. Charitable donations are being collected in high-traffic areas across the region.

Finally, we discussed the importance of thinking in local terms. In Taiwan, even Starbucks, Gardner notes, had to take cues from a local coffee purveyor in order to keep up.

No One ‘Likes’ Sharing Tragic News

In the days following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, people have been sharing news about the aftermath, recovery efforts, and how they can help as far and wide as the Internet will allow. However, a reader brought up an issue with spreading the word using Facebook tools.

“Sentiment can be lost,” Jonathan Gardner, director of comms at Vibrant told us. A friend, he told us in an email, sent him a link to a CNN.com story with a Facebook social plug-in. Along the right side of the page, it listed stories that friends “like,” among them, one about a tsunami threat to Russia, Hawaii, and Taiwan. “No one wants to ‘like’ a tragedy,” Gardner writes.
