Edge of Tomorrow: Live. Die. Rebrand.

ldr.0

For many, Edge of Tomorrow became the blockbuster that wasn’t.

Critics loved it, and so did its audience:

“Gripping, well-acted, funny, and clever, Edge of Tomorrow offers entertaining proof that Tom Cruise is still more than capable of shouldering the weight of a blockbuster action thriller.” [Rotten Tomatoes]

—only there were never enough of those fans to bring the Tom Cruise-led action flick into the black: It opened to a disappointing $29.1 million and today stands just under the $100 million mark, which is $78 million short against its $178 million budget (foreign grosses and marketing expenses aside.

So what went wrong? Warner Brothers Studio has apparently concluded that  Tis but thy name that is my enemy.

You Can ‘Tour’ Middle Earth on Google Maps Now

You read that right. Google and Warner Brothers have paired up to promote The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug by empowering superfans to “tour” certain areas of Middle Earth via Google Maps. Here’s the site.

Of course, Google also encourages users to download Chrome for the optimized 3D experience. See what they did there?

There’s a trailer too:

“Trollshaw?” Is that Google’s new name for the YouTube comments section?

At any rate, these tours look more exciting than the first Hobbit movie, so color us ever-so-slightly intrigued!

The Friday Dump: Ben Affleck Ruined Your Weekend

Yes he is. And before you ask: sorry, but you are not the only person who immediately tweeted “And Matt Damon will be Robin, right?” We’ll also remind you not to bother contacting the White House; they already blocked the “make it illegal for Ben Affleck to play Batman (or any other superhero) on film for the next 200 years” petition.

Christian Bale, Star of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, Visits Aurora, CO Hospital

As we reported earlier this week, Warner Brothers studio has been commended for responding to last week’s tragedy in Aurora, CO swiftly and responsibly, by canceling the international press tour and pulling many TV ads for The Dark Knight Rises. Now, Christian Bale, star of the film, has chosen to express his respect and sympathy by visiting with victims of the shooting.

According to The Denver Post, Bale and his wife, Sibi Blazic, met with seven patients at the Medical Center of Aurora on Tuesday afternoon. Hospital interim president Bill Voloch said that Bale notified hospital officials that he wanted to visit the injured, and asked that the media not be notified in advance.

Bale and his wife also met with a number of doctors and first responders, and visited a memorial that has been set up near the movie theater. Officials from Warner Brothers have said that Bale decided to go Aurora on his own, and was not asked to do so by the studio.

The actor had released a statement in the wake of the tragedy, saying, “Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.” It’s one thing to release such a statement, but quite another to turn words into actions and make the direct, personal impact that Bale made during his trip to Aurora.

“It was good for the patients,” Voloch told The Denver Post. “We hope it was therapeutic for them, and all the staff really appreciated him coming.”

Warner Brothers Pulls TV Ads, Cancels International Press Activities for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

In the wake of the tragedy that unfolded during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO on Friday, Warner Brothers movie studio has acted quickly and respectfully, choosing to cancel much of their marketing for the film, including the remainder of the international press tour and many television ads.

As FishbowlLA reported, the Paris press conference and evening red carpet premiere, which had been scheduled for last Friday, were canceled, as were premieres and press junkets in Mexico City and Tokyo, which had been scheduled for this week. The studio also refrained from sharing TDKR box office numbers for the film’s opening weekend.
