Career Development Series: Tips for Finding the Firm That’s Right For You

Having a job is important, but having the right job is equally important. The PR industry is filled with firms large, small, and everywhere in between. Moreover, they’re working with different clients, are staffed with people that have varying priorities, and have created a unique style that makes finding the right firm kind of like finding the right boyfriend or girlfriend. Do you have things in common? Are you heading in the same direction? Do you both like watching Bravo reality shows and sports?

Oh… yeah… right. PR jobs. Gotta find the right firm. How do you do that? Start at the start.

“Looking for a job should be a job,” says Margarita Miranda-Abate, SVP of the consumer lifestyle practice at Kaplow. “Why are you not happy where you are? What’s not fulfilling you? You should know why you’re making the switch.” In other words, take some time for introspection to determine what you’d like to do. Having a good grasp of what the goal is will make achieving it possible.

GCI Health Adds Education Practice

GCI Health has launched a new practice that will focus on patient education and patient-doctor relations.

Synchronicity will specialize in educating patients in disease management, teach them about sticking with their medication, and address other healthcare issues. The practice will also provide doctors with materials, tools, and resources to help them better communicate with patients. Sharon Savel and Cathy Fink, who each have 25 years of experience in patient education, will lead the practice.

“PR and media still play a role to enhance” Synchronicity’s projects, Wendy Lund, GCI Health CEO said when talking about the offerings in the new practice area.  “It’s related, but it’s a separate skill set.”

MS&L Loses Another Healthcare Exec

With the departure of Kelly Dencker this week, MS&L has lost four senior healthcare execs since the beginning of the year. MS&L Worldwide is a division of Publicis Groupe.

Unlike MaryEllen O’Donohue, Monique da Silva, and Wendy Lund, who left for other large global firms, Dencker signed with NJ-based Coyne PR as SVP and head of their healthcare practice. Coyne at last check, had under a hundred people and billings of around $12 million.

O’Donohue, da Silva, and Lund left for Cohn & Wolfe, Ogilvy PR, and Cohn & Wolfe’s GCI Health respectively, all divisions of the massive WPP Group (NASDAQ: WPPGY).

Ogilvy PR Snags MS&L Vet To Lead Healthcare Practice

Monique da Silva has joined Ogilvy PR as Executive Vice President/Head of North America Healthcare Practice, the agency said today.

da Silva previously served as Global Healthcare Director at MS&L Worldwide, where she worked with clients including sanofi aventis, Genzyme, Pfizer, Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Roche.

In related news, earlier this month Cohn & Wolfe hired healthcare PR vet MaryEllen O’Donohue away from MS&L to serve as Executive Vice President, Strategy and Client Service.

Also, Wendy Lund was named CEO of Cohn & Wolfe’s GCI Health division in early February. She was previously EVP, Global Business & Client Development at MS&L. Cohn and Wolfe hired Mike Kan to run its global healthcare practice.

MS&L hired Joan Cetera as Senior Vice President, Consumer Home and Wellness on February 18th. She had previously been with Ogilvy PR.

An MS&L rep told PRNewser today they didn’t know if the agency would be hiring to replace the other open positions.

As PRNewser previously noted, there has been a significant game of musical chairs taking place in recent months in regards to healthcare executives on both the brand and agency sides.

MaryEllen O’Donohue Joins Cohn & Wolfe from MS&L

Cohn & Wolfe announced today that MaryEllen O’Donohue is joining the firm from MS&L to focus on healthcare. Her title at the WPP-owned shop (Nasdaq: WPPGY) will be Executive Vice President, Strategy and Client Service. She was at MS&L for 24 years, where she launched the first healthcare media relations practice. At Cohn, O’Donohue she will also contribute to consumer, technology and corporate work.

A rep inside the firm tells us that healthcare has always been Cohn & Wolfe’s biggest practice, and with the changes going on in the sector, “we’re committed to providing as much talent and expertise as possible”.

From our perch, there’s no doubt there’s a war for talent in healthcare and related fields, and that connections to global brands will be critical in luring and maintaining clients. For example, O’Donohue has client experience with Roche, and C&W’s head of healthcare public affairs Linda Dyson joined the firm last fall from Roche.

Cohn & Wolfe also recently hired Mike Kan to head up global healthcare, and Wendy Lund as their new CEO for the GCI Health division.

Healthcare PR Execs Play Musical Chairs

PRNewser has received several announcements over the last few months pointing us to recently hired healthcare practice leads at large agencies.

PRWeek‘s Jaimy Lee noticed and reported on the trend as well.

“MS&L, Burson-Marsteller, and Hill & Knowlton have lost at least two of their top healthcare leaders in the last four months. Euro RSCG PR, Cohn & Wolfe, Ketchum, and Porter Novelli have also reported healthcare practice leadership changes since March 2009,” she wrote.

Here is a quick round-up of some of the more recent moves:

Wendy Lund will be CEO of Cohn & Wolfe’s GCI Health division, effective next Monday. She was EVP Global Business & Client Development at MS&L.

Anna Maria DeSalva, formerly worldwide director of healthcare for Hill & Knowlton, joined Pfizer as VP of worldwide communications in November. Dolly Judge, former VP of government relations for Pfizer, has joined H&K as SVP and director of healthcare policy.

New Leadership at Cohn & Wolfe’s LA Office, and GCI Health Division

A week after announcing the promotion of Patricia Godefroy to Chief Branding Officer, Cohn & Wolfe hired Kazumi Mechling to fill her position as head of the Los Angeles office.

Mechling joins the WPP-owned shop (Nasdaq: WPPGY) from Waggener-Edstrom where she was EVP and consumer marketing practice leader. She will report directly to CEO Donna Imperato. C&W’s L.A. office serves big brand accounts including Walmart, Taco Bell, Mattel, Ubisoft, Pioneer, and Blu-Ray.

Mechling is a veteran of a number of big agencies, including Edelman Japan where she worked for a few years after her Tokyo-based firm MediaWorks was acquired in 1995.
