Roll Call: Edelman, FleishmanHillard, Zocalo Group and More

Edelman has named Gail Becker president of strategic partnerships and global integration, effective immediately. In the newly created position, Becker, currently chair of Canada, Latin America and U.S. Western Region, will identify and advance strategic alliances and partnerships globally and oversee the execution and integration of those business relationships across the network. She will also have executive oversight of MATTER, the sports, entertainment and experiential marketing arm of DJE Holdings. Becker will report to Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Edelman, and continue to be based in Los Angeles. Alan VanderMolen, vice chairman DJE Holdings, will now oversee Canada and Latin America. He will report to Matthew Harrington, global chief operating officer in this role and continue to report to Edelman in his role as vice chairman. VanderMolen, in addition to his new role, will continue to oversee Edelman’s eight global practices—Consumer Marketing, Digital, Health, Corporate, Public Affairs, Technology, Business + Social Purpose and Crisis and Risk, Edelman’s intellectual property such as the Trust Barometer as well as Edelman’s sister agency Zeno. FleishmanHillard International Communications announced the appointment of Kirsten Whipple as health and wellness practice leader in its Chicago office. Kirsten joined FleishmanHillard in February 2011 as a senior vice president and the group has tripled in size during her tenure. She currently leads a client portfolio that includes Abbott, AbbVie, Beech-Nut and Retale, with programs ranging from brand reputation and scientific communications to consumer PR programs and issues management. Zocalo CEO Paul Rand Delivers Commencement Speech

It’s graduation time and among the many commencement speakers taking the podium at commencement ceremonies across the country is Paul Rand, the CEO and president of Zócalo Group, the Chicago-based word-of-mouth and social media firm.

Rand spoke to graduates at Medill Northwestern University‘s part-time Integrated Marketing Communications program. During his speech, he recommended living a “recommendable” life. We’ve got a snippet above and the full speech after the jump.

PR Event News from Around the World

The PRSA has announced the nominees for its leadership positions for 2012. Among the candidates are Mickey Nall, MD of Ogilvy PR in Atlanta for chair, Kathy Barbour, comms manager at the Mayo Clinic for treasurer, and Elizabeth Pecsi, director of executive communications at Unisys Corp. for director-at-large. Nominations can also be filed by September 16. Voting will take place on October 15 during the PRSA International Conference in Orlando, FL.

Also, in case you didn’t see the tweet, Zócalo Group and the Chicago Tribune, organizers of Social Media Week in Chicago, are looking for sponsors, speakers, and volunteers for the event, taking place September 19 through 23.

And The Baltic PR Weekend has been scheduled for September 22 and 23 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The Russian Public Relations Association (RASO), SPN Ogilvy, and the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) are the organizers of that event.

Roll Call: Zócalo Group, Ketchum, Voce, and More

Hugo Pérez has joined Zócalo Group as VP and account director of Hispanic marketing. He will lead the firm’s WOM and social media efforts targeting the Hispanic marketing. Pérez is a former journalist who has worked at NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and MSNBC.com. He also has comms experience, working with organizations including Mars, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, and the Latin Grammys.

Marc Levy is joining Ketchum New York as SVP of insights and creative catalyst responsible for providing counsel to account teams as they develop client initiatives. Previously, Levy was EVP and U.S. creative director at Cohn & Wolfe. He also previously worked with Ketchum between 1995 and 2001 in the firm’s brand practice.

Christopher Barger will join Voce Communications as SVP of global programs beginning April 11. Most recently, he was director of global social media at GM. While at the auto company, he focused on social media content and community development and providing training to GM staffers. Ad Age has a Q&A with Barger here.

U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance Selects Ketchum

The U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance (USFRA) has chosen Ketchum as its primary comms agency. Ketchum will be working with Zócalo Group, its WOM and social media agency, and maslansky luntz + partners, a firm that a specialty in messaging and message development. The goal is to improve agriculture’s image and raise consumer confidence in food production processes.

The resulting campaign will launch in July.

WOMMA’s Paul Rand: “Integration is Key”

The Word of Mouth Marketing Association hosted its 2010 Summit last week. According to Paul Rand, president and CEO of Zócalo Group and president of the WOMMA board of directors, 500 visitors from around the world attended the Las Vegas event.

With an eye towards “best practices and next practices,” the conference focused on a number of topics like the differences between social media and word of mouth marketing, measurement and ROI, and integration.

“Integration is key,” says Rand. “The walls are coming down. [It] really is an organizational effort.”

We spoke with Rand in greater detail about the conference and the word of mouth landscape.
