TomKat Issues a Joint Statement on the Occasion of Their Divorce Settlement
It’s only been two weeks since our worlds were rocked by the announcement that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were calling their marriage quits and already a settlement has been reached and a statement issued.
“We are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri’s best interest,” reads the grammatically incorrect statement coming from Amanda Lundberg, Cruise’s PR rep at 42West.
“We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents,” the statement continues.
There had been speculation that the divorce proceedings would bring the wrath of public opinion down on Scientology. A leaked email that has shown up on a number of blogs quotes an angry Scientologist, Daniele Lattanzi, who asked that members get aggressive when they spot “offensive statements” posted on the Web.
“If [there] is only one person (me) reporting these issues, the moderator at Microsoft will not take the comment off. If you start to have 10 or 20 people reporting it, they are going to take this down,” the email says.
A spokesperson for the Church said the comments don’t represent the whole of the organization. There’s still a court date to deal with next week, but it sounds like the couple want to handle the proceedings as quietly as possible, which would be a boon to the Church. Nonetheless, the whole situation does nothing to improve Scientology’s reputation with the world at large.
