Weber Shandwick will be supporting the international communications campaign for Munich 2018, an Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games bid committee. Pyeongchang, South Korea and Annecy, France are also in the running.
Weber Shandwick has Olympic experience, helping Sochi, Russia win its bid for the 2014 Winter and Paralympic Winter Games. It also helped with Beijing 2008 and Turin 2006.
According to the AFP, Germany is promising “full stadiums and a huge sponsorship potential” should Munich host the games. The Wall Street Journal says efforts have run into an obstacle closer to home, with a group called “Nolympia” made up of environmentalists, farmers, and others, is opposed to the games.
A spokesperson for the Munich bid, Jochen Faerber, stresses the infrastructure gains that would be made should Munich get the nod. And the Munich 2018 website has a section addressing environmental issues.
The decision will be made in Durban, South Africa on July 6.
