It’s the elevator fight that rocked the internet! Of course, I’m talking about the silent clip of Solange going after Jay Z at The Standard Hotel following the Met Gala. After many days of silence, we finally got a statement, sent to the AP.
“As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.”
In other words, “that’s all, folks”. Nothing to see here. We won’t be taking any questions.
The sisters have also been sending cryptic messages via Instagram, with Solange previously deleting all of the photos of Beyonce from her account save one. Then Beyonce posting a couple of photos post-leak including the one above. Then Solange posting one of the two of them as children for #TBT.
In the grand scheme of things, really, this doesn’t matter except that now all of a sudden you have people asking — gasp — are Bey and Jay really perfect?! Of course not. But it is significant when you think that the couple were previously thought to be above tabloid talk. For the past few days, that’s all this situation has been.
Reputation.com/Fifteen Minutes PR chairman Howard Bragman told The Daily Beast, ”These two are among the Brad and the Angelinas. They present their image better than anyone in Hollywood. That’s why this whole event is surprising.”
Another specialist, Eric Schiffer of ReputationManagementConsultants.com, suggests this is a good thing because “…it shows that Jay Z and Beyoncé are just like us.” Mmm hmm… all of us have had a family brouhaha break out in an elevator after one of the most glamorous events of the year.
Ultimately, the silence that came from all three entertainers indicates they just want it to go away. And it most certainly will. The statement is probably what most people expected, and doesn’t really do much to quell what’s feeding the story — speculation. Anecdotally, we’ve heard at least two dozen times this week, “What I would do to hear the audio of that tape! I wonder what they were fighting about.”
In the end, it’s probably Solange and The Standard Hotel that will have the lingering stain of this follow them. Solange because she was always the lesser-known Knowles sister and now she’s infamous for something outrageous and unrelated to her music. (If you haven’t heard this song or this one — and watched the amazing videos — you’re missing out.) If you look on YouTube, the fight clip and all sorts of parodies come up before her music videos do.
And for the Standard, they want to be the spot celebrities go to for big events and secret rendezvous. They’ve found the employee who leaked the video and fired him/her, but they’ll have to rebuild the trust they lost with this incident.
