Known for its feisty advocacy of writers' legal rights and democratic transparency, the National Writers Union is the nation's only trade union for freelance writers of all kinds. Founded as an outgrowth of the historic 1981 American Writers Congress, the NWU in 1992 became a local of the Technical, Office and Professional department of the powerful United Auto Workers (UAW) to add financial, legal and political clout to writers' goals, including the successful 2001 Supreme Court decision barring publishers and database companies from using and selling writers' works online without permission or compensation. NWU actively pursues legislative reforms in Washington, D.C. and in state legislatures to benefit writers and promote human rights.

The NWU - with divisions for Journalists, Book Authors, and Business and Technical Writers - has 16 chapters around the country. It has a health insurance program and offers members listservs, forums, seminars, and electronic newsletters for vital networking and information on the publishing industry. NWU's Grievance and Contracts Division provide members free advice on contract terms and negotiations with publishers, and assistance by trained grievance officers when problems develop with publishers, winning almost $2 million for NWU members. The NWU website is rich in content and has a members-only section with an online Agents Database, Authors Network of members' homes open to touring and researching members, local reviewers and booksellers, Jobs Hotline, media rates database, and other programs.
