December 10 11:00 am - 11:45 am The Big Debate: Can Real Money Gambling and Social Gaming Converge? The U.S. online gambling market is developing quickly, and social game developers need to be paying attention. Curiosity mounts and lingers about whether social casino gamers can be converted into real money gamblers. What do managers and developers on each side need to know about the uniqueness and idiosyncrasies of the other? Which real-life examples of cooperation have already shown promise? A panel of interactive gaming pioneers will address this increasingly important phenomenon.

December 10 11:45 am - 12:30 pm Gamblification! Interaction between Social Games and Online Gambling Gamblification relates to the intersection of social media and gambling. It is a play on the concepts of gamification and gambling. While gamification relates to using game mechanics for non-game purposes, gamblification refers to the use of gambling mechanics for non-gambling purposes (ideally!). Examples are Zynga poker and other social games and apps that include a “gambling-like” element but do not involve real money gambling. Given the complexity of the legal issues around these concepts, it is not always easy to ensure that one does not unintentionally cross the line into illegal or regulated gambling. The issues can be particularly confusing for some when virtual goods and/or virtual currency are used. These issues are critical to understand because many businesses are ramping up investment in this area and regulators are increasing regulatory scrutiny. This session will provide an overview of key legal issues with gamblification along with a review of some of the recent enforcement actions and a summary of the legal strategies to minimize risks.

In this hybrid session, we combine world famous professional gamers with seasoned veterans from the development side. The discussion will center on issues pertaining to what the users like to see versus what the developers think they can deliver, and how the overall playing experience can thus be optimized.

December 11 11:00 am - 11:45 am Adding Analytics To Your Social and Casino Developer Toolkit Analytics is an essential tool in every social and casino developer toolkit. However, what does analyzing data actually mean? Dashboards and metrics are useful, but only confirm what has happened. So what if your average user session is 1.4? Listening to your players and understanding different behaviors through player segmentation provides actionable insights and is the cornerstone to optimizing game design. Player Relationship Management is the new doctrine in Games. Advanced analytics helps developers to build a relationship with their players. Using effective messaging tools and in-game strategy drives monetization by improving player engagement and retention.

In fact, just the possibility of winning a prize no matter what the prize actually is can dramatically increase overall play time of a user inside of a game social game, as strange as this might sounds. Sam will talk about how using real-life prizes can effectively increase - and even turbo charge - the amount of time your users spend in games and apps. He will also touch upon how to effectively leverage virtual currency and prizes together with the goal of increasing engagement exponentially.

December 11 3:30 pm - 4:15 pm Smartphone and Mobile: The Rise of Native Ads Smartphone and mobile has infiltrated nearly every aspect of our lives – especially in gaming and social networking, where mobile gaming apps have garnered cult-like status among consumers and the media. However, the ubiquity of gaming and social apps does not equal profitability. How do these games sustain monetary value and consumer interest in an overflowing app market? Up until last year, in-app purchasing and paid apps were the only real source of monetizing the mobile user base with more than 90% of the 100 top-grossing iPhone apps using in-app purchasing. Though in-app purchasing is an important part of an app’s revenue model, only a small percentage of users actually pay. The goal is to monetize the other 97% or so of users who use the apps. Mobile advertising traditionally underperforms compared to web, but now with the rise of native advertising, the industry is starting to see expedited eCPM convergence.
