CBS’ Morley Safer Emails Distaste for Old Club’s New Policy

CBS “60 Minutes” correspondent Morley Safer is trying to keep the old traditions of the Century Association alive by keeping its ties with an all-male club in London, The New York Times reports today.

Safer wrote emails, obtained by the Times, to the organization describing the slippery slope this separation could go down:

What will be next? Disassociation with clubs that do not cater to vegans on their menus? Kosher dining rooms? Special facilities for nudists and transsexuals? Abolition of ‘Centurion’ to describe our members, given that the term is, according to the OED, derived from the all-male Roman army?

The 78-year-old CBS correspondent described an important female member of the group as “whining,” “self-pitying” and “vindictive.”

Safer affirmed that he had written the emails, but told the paper, “I am sorry this has become public. This is a private matter among club members.”

‘Morning Joe’ in Chicago with Oprah Winfrey & Tom Brokaw

“Morning Joe” this morning was a tribute to Chicago — and of course, you can’t mention Chicago without Oprah Winfrey. Alongside hosts Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, and Willie Geist, special guest Tom Brokaw said of Chicago, “This is not just Chicago, this is Oprahland. You come to Chicago and when you’re taken into the Oprahland, it’s really a remarkable experience.”

TVNewser’s Alissa Krinsky, who took the photo below, was at the taping this morning. She’ll have much more later including interviews with Joe and Mika, as well as with incoming Washington, D.C. bureau chief Antoine Sanfuentes and NBC News president Steve Capus who was in London last week heading up planning for his anchors and reporters covering the chaos in Egypt: “You have to think about safety first.”
