Carole Radziwill on Her Move to Reality TV: ‘Journalists Are All Attracted to Spectacle’

Carole Radziwill is not the type of person you’d expect to find on reality TV. She started her career at ABC News in 1989 working for Peter Jennings‘ documentary unit, where she reported from Cambodia, Haiti, India and Israel. Radziwill has won three Emmy awards and produced segments for 20/20, Primetime Live and Day One.

After leaving TV news, Radziwill penned What Remains, a memoir that delves into the deaths of her husband and friends John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessett-Kennedy. And now she’s debuting her first novel (on dating) and is one of the stars of The Real Housewives of New York City, which premieres next month on Bravo. Radziwill talked to Mediabistro about why a journo would end up on reality TV:

I think journalists are all attracted to spectacle, whether it’s war, politics or cultural phenomenon. I’m also an experience junkie and this was an experience. It’s something I’ll do for a few years, and when I’m 80, I’ll look back and say, ‘Oh, that’s why I did it.’ If it’s the worst thing I ever did in my life, I’m OK with that. But I don’t think it will be.

How Two Former TV Producers Created Their Own Lifestyle Brand

As part of Mediabistro’s Profit From Your Passion series, we spoke to media moguls Melissa Musen Gerstein and Denise Albert, who’ve spent most of their careers in the TV business.

Albert’s first job out of college was at Inside Edition; she’s also done on-air reporting for local stations and the NBA, and eventually became a producer for Good Morning America. Meanwhile, Gerstein has worked as a producer on various shows, from Anderson Cooper 360 to The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. When the two met, they realized they had a similar desire to create a parenting-based lifestyle company. The result is The Moms brand, which started as a syndicated newspaper column, got picked up as a show for NBC and now includes a weekly show on Sirius XM Radio. Here’s how it all went down, according to Albert:

[When Melissa and I met] I was pregnant with my first child, and I felt like there was conversation missing in the parenting world. I wanted to have very smart conversations, and not talk about being pregnant, and not necessarily talk about how many diapers or poops or bottles my kid was going to have during the day. And so I had this idea to really do what I know and love, which is television and journalism, but in the parenting space. Melissa and I were connected through another person and we were told, ‘Oh, you guys have the same idea.’ And so that’s how we originally began as Moms in the City. We wanted something where we could have this parenting conversation in a forum that we knew — television.

Joe Ruffolo, SVP of ABC News Digital, on Mobile, Social and Live Video

Joe Ruffolo knows that news happens 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So a key strategy for the senior vice president of ABC News Digital is to create new initiatives to get the word out faster, whether it’s through live videos, improving mobile features or increasing the brand’s social media presence.

As part of our Profit From Your Passion series, focusing on TV/Entertainment, we talked to Ruffolo about why live video is such an important platform for ABC News Digital: “We started this last year with the elections, where we actually did our own coverage. [On] election night, we had over 10 million live streams going just of the ABC News Digital coverage, which is just a huge, exciting opportunity for us.”
