Adam May, Lori Jane Gliha and Christof Putzel will be three of the correspondents reporting for the program.

“America Tonight” will originate from The Newseum in Washington DC, in the space formerly occupied by ABC News’ “This Week.” The series “will present in-depth segments each night on the economy, government, education, healthcare and the environment, and include breaking news.” the channel says.

Who’s NOT in the Running for AJA Chief?

Cross off the name of former ABC News president David Westin from the list of possible chief executives for Al Jazeera America, to launch in late August.

Westin says he’s had “some discussions” with the new network , but he doesn’t want the job. “They asked me for advice, for some names,” he tells TVNewser. “I told them what they’re doing is very interesting, very worthwhile, and worth following very closely, but I don’t think that it is for me.”

Work-wise, Westin is doing “about six things” these days, including advising a digital media company, making speeches and pro bono work. As for his next move, “I’m taking my time,” he says. “I’m interested in a fulltime position, but only if it’s the right one. I’m very fortunate that way.”

Al Jazeera America To Launch In August, With Fewer Commercials Than Competitors

As The Cable Show kicks off in Washington DC, more details continue to trickle out in advance of Al Jazeera America’s launch. While Ehab Al Shihabi, Al Jazeera’s executive in charge of the new venture, is still looking for a chief executive to run it, there are some things he knows they will be doing.

According to B&C‘s Andrea Morabito, AJAM will launch the week of August 24.

At launch, Al Jazeera America’s primetime lineup will include the previously announced Ali Velshi show, which will be titled Real Money and air at 7 p.m., a nightly 60 Minutes-style newsmagazine at 9 p.m., and America Tonight, which will present a deep-dive analysis on key issues of the day.

The network will also have a morning show, though don’t expect a Today-style format with a group of anchors chatting on a couch. “We haven’t finalized the details of format, but it’s not going to look like [hosts] sitting and talking about kitchens,” says Al Shihabi, who adds like the rest of its schedule, the mornings will focus on in-depth, fact-based news.

The Los Angeles Times‘ Joe Flint also spoke to Al Shihabi, who told him that the channel would carry fewer commercials than its competitors.

Al Jazeera America Interviews Finalists For President Role

Al Jazeera America is closing in on finding its president.

Last week, Ehab Al Shihabi (pictured left), the executive director of international operations for Al Jazeera and the senior executive in charge of developing Al Jazeera America, was in New York City, where he interviewed the final candidates for the leadership role, TVNewser has learned.

Those interviews are likely one of the last hurdles before the channel decided who its new chief executive should be. Among the candidates said to be under consideration: former CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein, former CNN managing editor Mark Whitaker and former ABC News chief David Westin. We haven’t heard of any new names surfacing recently, though if you have, drop us a line.

Al Jazeera America is still on track to launch later this year, though an exact launch date is unclear. But that has not stopped the network from staffing up. Among the recent hires: CNN’s Ali Velshi, NBC’s Mike Viqueira and just today, investigative journalist Josh Bernstein.

Josh Bernstein Tapped As Investigative Reporter For Al Jazeera America

Al Jazeera America has named Josh Bernstein as an on-air investigative reporter, based in Washington DC. He will report to Ed Pound, the senior EP and head of AJA’s investigative unit.

Fittingly, given the recent national security leaks, Bernstein will focus on “corruption, fraud, waste, and official wrongdoing,” and “will be responsible for breaking news, uncovering scandals, and educating the public on what is really going on behind the closed doors of power,” the channel says.

Bernstein is a veteran investigative reporter, most recently for Fox affiliate KDVR Denver. He also worked for the shuttered iPad mag “The Daily” in New York, KNXV Phoenix and KCRA Sacramento.

“Government, corporations, and those in power must be accountable to the American public,’’ Bernstein says in a statement. “That is where we will focus our efforts.’’

NBC’s Mike Viqueira Named White House Correspondent For Al Jazeera America

Al Jazeera America has named Mike Viqueira as its first White House correspondent.

Viqueira joins Al Jazeera America from NBC News, where he was a producer/correspondent covering Capitol Hill and other stories from the DC region.

Viqueira had been on the White House beat for four years, but when Peter Alexander joined Chuck Todd and Kristin Welker there in December, he was shifted back to Capitol Hill, where he had been based since 1998. The AJA gig returns Viqueira to the White House beat.

“This is a great opportunity, both because of Al Jazeera America’s commitment to the kind of straight-forward, hard-nosed journalism that all good reporters value, and because it’s tremendously exciting to be building something that will fill today’s critical need for real, unfiltered and fact-based news,” Viqueira said in a statement.

Viqueira joins other prominent hires, including CNN’s Ali Velshi, and Thomson Reuters executive John Meehan, who will oversee the channel’s business coverage.

Al Jazeera America To Be Less Al Jazeera, More America

Al Jazeera has garnered a reputation across the globe for its international reportage. When the channel announced that it had acquired Current TV, and would be rebranding it as Al Jazeera America, the general assumption was that the new channel would be reflective of Al Jazeera’s programming heritage: serious news reporting, with a strong focus on international affairs.

The NY Times‘ Brian Stelter reports that the channel is shifting somewhat: now almost all programming will be unique to AJA (with less shared content from Al Jazeera English than originally planned) but will also have a strong U.S. focus.

That plan is no more. Now Al Jazeera America is aiming to have virtually all of its programming originate from the United States, according to staff members and others associated with the channel who were interviewed in recent weeks.

It will look inward, covering domestic affairs more often than foreign affairs. It will, in other words, operate much like CNN (though the employees say they won’t be as sensational) and Fox News (though they say they won’t be opinion-driven).

The Daily Beast: Can Al Jazeera America ‘Save American Journalism’?

The Daily beast’s Christopher Dickey writes about the forthcoming launch of Al Jazeera America, and the impact it could have on American TV news.

It always seemed a little improbable that Arab sheiks could save American journalism. But in a business as troubled as the vast wasteland of American television news, hope springs eternal, and the Al Jazeera network out of Qatar seemed to offer an opulent oasis…

I’ve been following the ups and downs of Al Jazeera America all year, talking to staffers in the States, Europe, and the Middle East, and it’s still a good guess its pockets are too deep for it to fail, at least in the short term—or at least not before it launches. It will go on the air sometime in the not-too-dim future. And it will bring a lot of fresh energy as well as controversy to the news scene in the world’s most important television market. It could transform the way we see news and the way we think about it. But, then again, it could be a disaster in almost every sense of the word.

The studio space at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. is changing hands, Broadcasting & Cable’s John Eggerton reports. Next month, ABC’s “This Week” will vacate the space and return to the network’s Washington bureau, and Al Jazeera America will move in.

“This Week” is hosted by George Stephanopoulos in New York a majority of the time. ABC’s D.C. bureau will be home to Washington-based guests and for the one week a month that Martha Raddatz guest-hosts the show.

Al Jazeera America, which B&C reports will have both office space and editing facilities in the Newseum, is preparing for its launch later this year. The network recently hired Adam May, a local reporter from Baltimore, as a D.C.-based national correspondent.

Al Jazeera America Adds Adam May as National Correspondent

Adam May will start as a national correspondent at Al Jazeera America in June. He will be based in Al Jazeera America’s Washington, D.C. bureau.

May comes from WJZ in Baltimore, where he has been an anchor and reporter for 10 years. TVSpy has more on his career in local news.

“It was a tough decision, especially saying goodbye to our viewers who have been so loyal over the last few years,” May told David Zurawik of The Baltimore Sun. “I now consider many of them friends, and I hope when they still see me walking around Baltimore, they’ll come up and say hi.”

Al Jazeera America On The Hunt For Chief

TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman weighs in on Al Jazeera America, which is currently on the lookout for a chief executive to run the new channel, which will take over the channel space of Current TV later this year.

Waxman has a list of names that she says are in consideration, and there are many familiar faces. Current TV chief David Bohrman is said not to be in the running, while Steve Capus is said to be “skeptical.”

One of the leading candidates, according to Waxman, is former CNN/U.S. chief Jonathan Klein:

Klein, who was fired in 2010, has the news experience and is believed to want the job. According to an individual with knowledge of his thinking, Klein believes there is a ripe opportunity for a news network to occupy the niche that CNN used to — in other words, hard-core reporting with serious journalists.

Others on the list include former CNN managing editor Mark Whitaker, former ABC News president David Westin and former CBS News president Andrew Heyward.

Al Jazeera Opening Detroit, Chicago Bureaus

Al Jazeera America has said that it plans to differentiate itself from the cable news competition by covering stories the others won’t. One way to do that is to have full bureaus in places that the competitors have either a skeleton staff or no one at all.

To that end, the channel says that it will open full bureaus in Chicago, Illinois and Detroit, Michigan. The American auto business is still based in Detroit, and that seems to be the impetus behind having a bureau there.

“We want our reporters to be where the stories are and Detroit continues to be where American business stories and trends are happening,” said Ehab Al Shihabi, executive director of international operations for Al Jazeera in a statement.

Politico’s Dylan Byers has the full list of bureaus that Al Jazeera America is planning, including New Orleans, Nashville and Seattle.

Iraq Suspends Al Jazeera, Nine Other Channels For ‘Encouraging Violence’

Iraq has suspended 10 TV channels, including Al Jazeera, for “encouraging violence and sectarianism.”

Iraq has experienced a number of violent sectarian attacks over the last week, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Al Jazeera has the details on what happened:

“We took a decision to suspend the licence of some satellite channels that adopted language encouraging violence and sectarianism,” Mujahid Abu al-Hail of the Communications and Media Commission (CMC) said on Sunday…

Responding to the accusation, Al Jazeera said in a statement: ”We are astonished by this development. We cover all sides of the stories in Iraq, and have done for many years. The fact that so many channels have been hit all at once though suggests this is an indiscriminate decision.

Al Jazeera Eyes Tennis Channel

It sounds as though the Tennis Channel could become a key part of Al Jazeera’s plans to gain traction in the U.S. According to the New York Post‘s Claire Atkinson, the Qatar-backed cable news empire is looking to acquire Tennis Channel to secure a foothold in the U.S. sports TV market. Al Jazeera has BeIn Sport here in the U.S., and has been trying to become a player in the increasingly-crowded field for years.

Tennis, which is available in 34 million homes (and could go up to 50 million depending on the outcome of an FCC case), would add to its footprint tremendously. BeIn Sport is in 22 million homes.

“The Tennis Channel is in play and the Qataris are looking hard, ” said a source, referring to Al Jazeera’s deep-pocketed backers in the Gulf state.

“They are very focused on their worldwide sports empire, through Al Jazeera Americas and Paris Saint-Germain,” said a source familiar with talks.

The move is similar to one made earlier this year when Al Jazeera acquired Current TV, and is planning to relaunch it as “Al Jazeera America” this Summer.

Al Jazeera America Now Expected in Late Summer

The launch of Al Jazeera America may not happen until late Summer, the New York Post reports. The channel, which will take over Current TV, had hoped to be on the air in June but a source tells the post: “June is not going to happen. The best guess is August or September.” The Post also reports that finding a news chief is the top priority. Names in the mix include former NBC News president Steve Capus and former CNN president Jon Klein, as well as former NBC and CNN executives David Bohrman and David Doss. Bohrman had also been president of Current TV, which Al Jazeera acquired in January.
