UK Broadcasters Defend Airing Alleged Woolwich Killer Video

The BBC, ITV News and The Sun all aired the video footage of the alleged killer of a British soldier in London, his hands bloodied, still holding a meat cleaver.

The broadcasters are said to have received hundreds of complaints from viewers after showing the video. The Press Gazette caught up with spokespeople for the networks, who defended the decision to air it. They also spoke to a rep from Sky News, which opted not to air the video.

A spokesperson for ITV News said: “We carefully considered showing this footage ahead of broadcast and made the decision to do so on a public interest basis as the material is integral to understanding the horrific incident that took place yesterday…

John McAndrew, executive editor at Sky News, said: “We assessed the video at a senior editorial level – several times. Given the detail we had already learned about the attack, we took the decision not to run the video as we believed it would have been unnecessarily distressing.”

As it happens, ITV’s decision also drew criticism, as The Guardian revealed that it cut out the suspect saying “The only reason we have killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers.”

Is a Peacock Going To The Top Of 30 Rock?

When Comcast acquired all of NBCUniversal from General Electric in February, it also acquired the naming rights to 30 Rockefeller Plaza, currently known as the GE Building.

So far, Comcast and NBC have been mum about a new name, and the GE logo still adorns the side of the tower.

A trailer for a new show, however, suggests that an NBC Peacock may be coming soon to the top of “30 Rock.” The peacock is now also on Comcast’s corporate logo.

The show is the “Million Second Quiz,” a competition show that will air live from New York City for 12 consecutive days later this Fall. The trailer shows a helicopter flying over the top of a building that looks somewhat like 30 Rock, with an NBC peacock prominently placed, and no GE logo to be seen. It is computer generated, but still certainly has an air of legitimacy to it.

Update: It is not computer generated, but rather a shot of the NBC tower in Chicago, which does have the peacock on it, cleverly cut into shots of New York City. Still, would make some sense wouldn’t it?

Cable Network Ranker: Week of May 13

The NBA playoffs propelled TNT to an overwhelming lead in last week;’s cable network ranker, but the slow bubbling of political scandal kept Fox News in the top five, even as CNN and MSNBC dipped.

Soledad O’Brien to Executive Produce and Moderate the National Geographic Bee

Soledad O’Brien has been tapped as the new moderator of the National Geographic Bee, TVNewser has learned. An announcement is expected Wednesday morning.

O’Brien will take over moderating duties from Alex Trebek who has hosted the Bee for 25 years.

The contest, which uses materials from the National Geographic Society, is designed to increase public awareness about world geography. Trebek is hosting the 25th annual event this week. The finals are set for Thursday night and will air on PBS at a later date. O’Brien takes over for the 2014 edition and her Starfish Media Group will produce the event in which thousands of schools compete for scholarship money.

O’Brien has another connection to Trebek. She was a guest on Celebrity Jeopardy! in 2009 competing against Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Michael McKean.

Trebek has said he will also leave Jeopardy! after the 2015-16 season. Notable TV news names who’ve been floated as possible replacements include Brian Williams, Matt Lauer and Anderson Cooper.

Double Mastectomy Isn’t Slowing Down Shelley Ross

Add Shelley Ross’ name to the growing list of disciples of the Sisterhood of St. Angelina.

Ross, former executive producer of ABC’s “Good Morning America” and CBS’ “Early Show,” underwent a double mastectomy last month after discovering that she, too, carried the BRCA gene, which greatly increases the risk of developing breast cancer.

Ross says it was Jolie’s stunning Op Ed in the New York Times last Tuesday that convinced her to go public, the same day, via her blog, daily Xpress.

“I was literally shocked when I read about her,” Ross, 60, says. “I thought what she did was so smart. It’s an opportunity to expand the dialogue. Like her, I was able to write down all the details. Nobody can interpret this as if I’m dying.”

In this case, “nobody” is Ross’ code for media, which over the years has run some brutal (mostly anonymous) slams against the producer. Still, it was common knowledge that Ross’ uber-intensity had alienated her from many of her coworkers.

Says Ross: “I got the shit end of the stick from the media. It was like a feeding frenzy.”

With her mastectomy, Ross was determined not to repeat that experience, so she told no one outside a small group of friends. They kept her secret, she says.

“My real concern, to be perfectly honest, was with outlets … that have printed false, libelous, damaging, actionable reports, regardless of what I tried to correct,” says Ross.

“If it [mastectomy] got out to what is certainly a small handful of detractors, I would have read about some anonymous person ‘hearing a death rattle.’ I’m not dying and I’m not dead.”

In fact, after six months’ chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, a hysterectomy and an infection that hospitalized her last week, Ross is so not dead that she’s juggling several major projects.

Matt Lauer Welcomes The Cicada Brood Of 1996

In case you haven’t heard, the northeast is beginning to feel the brunt of an invasion, as billions of large insects called cicadas emerge from their underground homes to mate.

There are a few different broods of cicada, and this one last emerged in 1996. NBC’s “Today” helpfully shared a video of co-anchor Matt Lauer–then at WNBC New York–anchoring a newscast on the cicada, and featuring a report from correspondent Pat Battle.

NBC News Produces ‘The Office’ Special

Last night NBC aired the series finale of its sitcom “The Office.” The show, which follows the wacky and touching goings-on at the Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania, was never as big a hit as comedies like “The Big Bang Theory” or “Two and a Half Men,” but found a loyal audience large enough to sustain it for nine seasons.

Leading up to the finale, NBC aired a retrospective of the series, featuring interviews with the cast and crew, and video footage from a trip they made to Scranton celebrate the show. An astute reader noticed that the retrospective was actually produced by NBC News, although it didn’t feature any notable news talent.

As strange as it may seem, NBC’s news division–not unlike ABC and CBS–will occasionally be commissioned for specials that are more entertainment than information. Peacock Productions, a production house within NBC News, is producing daredevil Nik Wallenda‘s walk across the Grand Canyon next month on Discovery Channel, just as ABC News produced his walk across Niagara Falls. Still, having the news division produce a retrospective on a show that could easily have been produced by the show’s own staff is sure to raise some eyebrows.

Cable Network Ranker: Week of May 6

Cable TV viewership was down somewhat last week compared to prior weeks, perhaps owing to May sweeps on the broadcasters resulting in more people sticking to the channels lower down on the dial. The top two channels were entertainment channels TNT and USA, which had some big finales of their own. That said, cable news more than held its own, retaining strong ratings.

Soledad O’Brien Developing ‘White in America’

Soledad O’Brien is responding to criticism she’s received over remarks made recently while talking about her “Black in America” documentaries. In the process, she also made news about an upcoming series she’s developing called “White in America.”

During the talk at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, O’Brien discussed what critics call the “divisive” nature of “Black in America.”

First of all, it’s only white people who ever said that — ‘if we could just see beyond race. If only people didn’t see race, it would be such a better place, and you are responsible for bringing up these icky race issues, Soledad, you should just let sleeping dogs lie. I was like, again, ‘OK, white person, this is a conversation that you’re clearly uncomfortable with, and I have no problem seeing race, and I think we should talk about race.

In response today, O’Brien says, “My comments on the importance of discussing who we are and where we come from are nothing new. What is new is our friends in the blogosphere taking the conversation out of context and ginning up headlines so we lose sight of the real issues. I would encourage those reporting on my work to listen to the conversation in its entirety, and this time, turn their mute buttons off. As a journalist, my job is to probe the uncomfortable topics to drive conversation. I’m happy to see that’s still happening as a result of ‘Black In America,’ and I look forward to continuing that conversation as we continue to tell the stories of who we are. We’re not just working on BIA, but also developing a ‘White in America.’ Stay tuned for that one.”

O’Brien and CNN parted ways earlier this year, but through her production company, Starfish Media Group, she is producing documentaries which will air on CNN. O’Brien will deliver a “Black in America” special later this year and three more docs next year. In 2009, O’Brien also fronted “Latino in America.”

Former CBS, NBC Correspondent Ed Gordon: Interviews Were Easier in the ‘Old Days’

Former NBC and CBS correspondent Ed Gordon is the subject of Mediabistro’s latest “So What Do You Do?” interview. Gordon, the host of a nationally-syndicated radio show as well as an interview series on NBC O&Os, offered some advice about navigating “exclusive” interviews in today’s media landscape:

Well, it’s not as easy as it used to be in what I call the “old days.” I mean, it used to be that you got an exclusive and it was exclusive, and you were the only one who could talk to that person for, let’s say, at least a week, or a month, or during that period. Now, it’s very hard to get an exclusive interview because people just don’t believe in talking to one person. They’ll talk to you, and then Dr. Phil and Entertainment Tonight and everybody else. So, I think what you want to shoot for is getting someone to talk to you in a way they don’t talk to everyone else.

Former CBS News Correspondent Kimberly Dozier At Center Of AP/DOJ Story

“There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters,” wrote AP President and CEO Gary Pruitt in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, citing the severe Constitutional issues with the seizure.

Former CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier, now an intelligence and counterterrorism reporter for the AP, was one of the journalists who had their phone logs seized.
What Would ‘Murphy Brown’ Be Doing Today?

“Murphy Brown” was one of the preeminent sitcoms of the 1990s. The show, which starred Candice Bergen as the title investigative journalist and anchor, was a huge hit for CBS, and had a major cultural impact.

Last year, rumors abounded that the show may come back as a special for the 2012 election. That never came to fruition, but The Hollywood Reporter reunited the original writer’s room, and asked creator Diane English what Brown would be up to today:

“She’d be doing exactly the same thing. FYI would still be on the air, the way 60 Minutes is still on the air,” she says, noting that the cast simply would be “a little older” and “a little creakier.”

Cable Network Ranker: Week Of April 29-May 5

With the Boston bombing in the rearview mirror, the week of April 29-May 5 was something of a return to normalcy for cable news. While the Jodi Arias trial kept HLN elevated in the cable network ranker, CNN fell out of the top 10.
