Media Beat: How Brian Stelter Almost Became a Network TV Campaign Embed

How did an 18-year-old college student in Maryland gain the trust of and get access to TV executives and anchors in New York? “By posting 10 or 15 posts a day meant that the industry knew it was a reliable consistent source,” says Brian Stelter, creator of this site and now a media reporter for the New York Times and author of the just released “Top of the Morning.”

As he neared graduation, Stelter had to make a choice: work in TV news, or cover it.

Brian Stelter, who launched the blog you’re reading almost 10 years ago, is now a published author. “Top of the Morning,” out today, lays bare a tumultuous year which saw one anchor pack her bags, another face a serious health issue, a ratings leader fall — and lose a quarter of its audience — and an entirely new show launch. In his first interview for the book, Stelter tells us about the secrecy behind “Top of the Morning,” the access he got, and what he thinks about being called Matt Lauer‘s nemesis.

HLN has seen its viewership increase during the Jodi Arias murder trial, but what happens after the verdict is reached?

In this episode of Media Beat, “Raising America” anchor Kyra Phillips tells TVNewser’s managing editor Chris Ariens about the opportunity and the challenge presented by the network’s coverage of the Arias trial. “I want to say to them, ‘OK, I get it. I understand you’re interested in this. OK, we can give you some of that. We can continue to give you that. But also give me a chance to show you another way that we do TV, another way that we do news.”

We spoke to a number of huge names, including Ken Burns, Spike Lee and Dan Rather. Below is a selection of some of the best “Breaks” we saw this year. And stay tuned for “My First Big Break: Christiane Amanpour” coming Wednesday. Enjoy.

Ken Burns: My First Big Break

When you hear a letter written by Thomas Jefferson being read by actor Sam Waterston or see a photograph showing the intensity in the eyes of a Civil War soldier, you know you’re watching a Ken Burns documentary.

In this episode of My First Big Break, the iconic filmmaker tells the MediabistroTV crew how he channeled his feelings of humiliation into his first masterpiece on the Brooklyn Bridge and reveals how his mother’s death sparked his need to bring the dead back to life, shaping the style we know today as the “Ken Burns Effect.”

Conde´ Nast recently hosted MediabistroTV at its Times Square offices. Lucky magazine style editor and network television morning show contributor Lori Bergamotto walked the crew through Lucky’s offices revealing the hidden corners where nail polish and make up are put through their paces, colors and fabric samples are checked by the art department, shoes and handbags await their close-ups and racks of outfits hang around waiting for their models.

Take a look at all the small parts that make up a big fashion magazine like Lucky.

How Dan Rather Changed Hurricane Coverage

Most Americans know Dan Rather as an anchor at CBS News, or in his current role at AXS TV (formerly HDNet). What many people may not know, however, is that Rather was the originator of what is now a ubiquitous part of hurricane coverage: superimposing radar of the storm over a map.

Rather, who was a local reporter in Texas, jerry-rigged the graphic while covering Hurricane Carla near Galveston in 1961. He told us all about it when we interviewed him for the mediabistroTV series “My First Big Break.”

Go Inside Newsweek, as Iconic News Magazine Announces End to Print Edition

FishbowlNY reports that after 80 years, Newsweek is ending its print edition. December 31 will see the final Newsweek in print. In a note to staff, Newsweek/Daily Beast chief Tina Brown writes, “The inexorable move to an all-digital Newsweek comes with an unfortunate reality. Regrettably we anticipate staff reductions and the streamlining of our editorial and business operations both here in the United States and internationally.” FBNY has the full memo from Brown and CEO Baba Shetty, who joined the company <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/newsweekthe-daily-beast-names-baba-shetty-as-new-ceo_b68282"target="_blank">just last month.

At least one NewsBeast staffer has already found work, at Fox news. Politico’s Mike Allen Tweets:

big Fox get: Peter J. Boyer, who joined Newsweek/Daily Beast after 18 yrs at New Yorker, to Fox News as editor at large; announcement soon

MediabistroTV recently took a tour of the IAC Building and the NewsBeast offices. CNN contributor John Avlon was our tour guide. Take a look:
