Besser discussed ABC News’ new global health series, Be the Change: Save a Life. He also shared his thoughts on the most important public health stories from 2010.

“The goal here is to really inspire people across the country and look at the little things they can do in their lives to save lives around the globe,” Besser told us.

Public health issues and global health were getting very little coverage. I think a reason for that was that when you focus on the problems, these stories can be very difficult to handle. But when you think about the solutions… it really makes for incredibly compelling television” he added.

A “candid-camera with an ethical twist,” the show manufacturers interesting moral dilemmas using actors mixed with random passerby to see how they react. Quiñones tells us, “Sometimes people are amused, sometimes they’re shocked and angry, but in the end we’re always encouraged by how ordinary people who don’t know they’re on hidden camera react when they see something that seems unfair or out of whack.”

Having started at ABC News in 1982, he also told us a bit about the changes the network has gone through including the recent staff buyouts. He says, “It’s been a really tough time, there’s no getting around it…but the whole business has changed. We can’t cover the news the way we used to.”

AgencySpy explains how, using just $1,300, Slate was able to get its strange ad viewed by 1.3 million people.

PBS’ Kim Lawton, managing editor and chief news correspondent for PBS’s Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly, joined co-hosts Matt Van Hoven and Jason Boog on the Mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu for a great conversation about religion reporting and the top stories she’s working on.

The beat has taken her across the world — including to Sri Lanka after the tsunami where she and her driver had to beware of the wild elephants on the road — but it’s often challenging.

“We’re talking about people’s deepest held beliefs and they do get pretty nervous when you start asking them about them,” she said. “It’s a delicate line. I think a lot of faith communities have the idea that the media is out to get them.”

On the Menu, Lawton discusses everything from challenges for the Muslim community to how faith is playing a role in the Obama administration to what people are saying about Christmas carols.

“I don’t think it’s new media vs old media,” he said. “We’re all evolving.” Part of that evolution for CNN has involved integrating user-generated reporting in the form of tweets and iReports into its newsgathering. “It’s not an even an advanced tip-line. It’s a tip-line for now. It’s the right now tip-line.” But he explained that there is a clear vetting process for that kind of content at CNN.

Lemon believes everyone can be “their own network,” but there are big upsides and downsides to amateur reporting: “Anybody can have a blog right? It’s still not going to be the same professional quality…that you get from training.” And Lemon points out that a lot of blog contributors don’t have the resources at hand to fact-check information. “Can everyone be a network of record? Probably not.”

Lemon also gave us a pretty funny recap of his experiences at the Blog World Expo in Las Vegas during last few minutes, which is worth checking out.

He also wrote a column this week on The Daily Beast headlined, “How Iran’s Hackers Killed Big Brother,” about the Twitter uprising and what it means for the country. “Everyone was being very results-oriented, and ready to judge the efficacy of the Internet and politics based on whether or not they were able to overturn the election,” he said. “It seemed to me that the Twitterers could already claim a certain kind of victory.”

Staying in Iran, we discuss why there are fewer journalists in the country now, and why there are fewer media mergers as well. “That’s largely what ‘Life Inc.’ is about: the way we accept corporate logic as true, even when it’s not,” he said.
