NBC Sports Network Shaking Up ‘The Crossover,’ Dave Briggs Out

Just a few short months after the program debuted, NBC Sports Network is completely shaking up its early-evening show “The Crossover,” according to The Big Lead.

Dave Briggs, who joined NBC Sports from Fox News in January specifically to host the program, is being removed as co-host. Starting Monday, the show will have a new set, and Michelle Beadle will host alone, joined by a rotating cast of regulars. Briggs is expected to get hosting duties on another NBCSN program.

“The Crossover” was one of NBCSN’s highest-profile launches in recent memory, as Beadle was poached from ESPN (which wanted badly to keep her) and Briggs came from “Fox & Friends” weekend edition, which, while not as popular as the weekday edition, still does very well for FNC.

‘Today’ Show’s New Foe: the Daily News

There are few things newspaper editors like more than to write about troubled TV. Antenna envy, a former news director of mine used to call it. For the past few months the New York Daily News, which, earlier this year, hired former News of the World editor Colin Myler as its chief, has had its sights set on NBC’s “Today” show.

In an un-bylined story in today’s New York Daily News, there’s a report claiming “Today” “is on the verge of losing its general.” That would be show EP Jim Bell, who also produced the London Olympics for NBC. The story goes that Bell will move back, and up, at NBC Sports.

There’s nothing new in this piece that wasn’t reported by Reuters a month ago. TVNewser reaches out to “Today” quite regularly following up on this chatter. Recently, Bell told us, “I am very happy here. If you are a producer, it truly doesn’t get any better than working on the TODAY show and the Olympics.”

Could something change in the future? Of course. But nothing’s imminent.

Radio Host Finebaum to Write for SI.com

Radio host Paul Finebaum, a former columnist for al.com who last year wrote that Vanderbilt should be kicked out of the SEC for not being competitive in football, is joining SI.com as a columnist. He reported the news on Twitter, saying his first column will run Thursday. Perhaps his first piece will address the ongoing story involving USA Today oddsmaker Danny Sheridan, who recently went on Finebaum’s radio show claiming to know who paid Cam Newton‘s father, Cecil, so that the 2010 Heisman Trophy Winner would attend Auburn. Sheridan has refused to name the alleged “bag man,” claiming his source within the NCAA would lose their job. The NCAA, for their part, says Sheridan’s claims are without merit.

Finebaum’s popular radio show is syndicated throughout the southeast and can also be heard on Sirius XM Radio (Channel 91).

The Red Sox and the Yankees begin another series in their hate-filled rivalry tonight, so that means it must be time for another Alec Baldwin-John Krasinski video from New Era. In this installment — the fifth in a six-video campaign — Baldwin, a diehard Yankees fan, and Krasinski, a diehard Red Sox fan, are communicating via Skype when Baldwin decides he’s going to burn a handful of tickets to Red Sox home games. Why does he do this? Because doing so is supposed to make a Red Sox fan like Krasinski apoplectic. In burning the tickets, Baldwin inadvertently burns down his apartment building (which is supposed to be hilarious), and then has to go on the lam, so he goes to Krasinski’s apartment to hide out. I think Yankee fans would have rather seen Baldwin burn Curt Schilling’s bloody sock.

Ron Artest Will Compete In Dancing with the Stars

After back-and-forth rumors, Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest will compete in the 13th season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

Artest is still interested in playing for Cheshire Jets of the British Basketball League. If Artest really can’t dance like he claims, he will be free to play basketball by Oct. 1.

He will be joined by David Arquette, Chaz Bono, Elisabetta Canalis, Kristin Cavallari, Nancy Grace, Rob Kardashian, Carson Kressley, Ricki Lake, J.R. Martinez, Chynna Phillips and Hope Solo on the season premiere Sept. 19.

So much for getting those A-listers.

Is Bill Parcells The Latest ESPN NFL Analyst?

With the NFL right around the corner, ESPN has gone on an analysts hiring spree, signing Eric Mangini, Hugh Douglas and Damien Woody.

It appears the Worldwide Leader has their eyes set on at least one more big name, according to USA Today:

“ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys says ex-coach Bill Parcells is still “likely” to be added as an analyst, primarily to appear on big-event coverage like the the postseason and NFL Draft and making occasional regular-season appearances rather than taking on a weekly schedule.”

ESPN has had a better offseason than the Philadelphia Eagles.

Gina Carano is so good looking that watching her compete in mixed martial arts is akin to watching a Hollywood actress dirty up to win an Oscar. Given that, it’s no surprise that Hollywood would eventually come calling for Carano, who’s starring in Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh‘s upcoming film Haywire. Here’s the IMDB description of the movie, which is being released in January: “A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.”

OK, not exactly a stretch for Carano. But considering the principals involved in the film, including Soderbergh, Michael Douglas, Ewen McGregor, Bill Paxton and Antonio Banderas, Haywire will probably be better than Barb Wire with Pamela Anderson.

Doc Emrick Joining NBC/Versus Full-Time

Mike “Doc” Emrick is ending his career as the New Jersey Devils play-by-play announcer to take a full-time position with NBC/Versus.

The Pac 10 is no more; long live the Pac 12. Today, July1, the athletic conference officially welcomed two new member schools, Colorado and Utah, pushing the league total to a dozen universities. The conference last expanded in 1978, when Arizona and Arizona State came aboard and joined California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State.

“This is a very exciting day and a historic moment for our conference, for college athletics and for Colorado and Utah,” Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said. “Our conference was built on a pioneering spirit and through innovation that has contributed to some of the most valuable advancements in this country and the world. MLB Rejects Frank McCourt's Deal With Fox

The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered another setback Monday when Major League Baseball rejected a proposed Fox television contract.

Under the proposed $3 billion deal, owner Frank McCourt would have received $385 million upfront. The Dodgers have struggled to meet payroll all season and reportedly doesn’t have enough cash to meet his June 30 obligations. Below is the statement released by MLB regarding the proposed deal:

“Pursuant to my authority as Commissioner, I have informed Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt today in a detailed letter that I cannot approve the club’s proposed transaction with FOX. This decision was reached after a full and careful consideration of the terms of the proposed transaction and the club’s current circumstances. It is my conclusion that this proposed transaction with FOX would not be in the best interests of the Los Angeles Dodgers franchise, the game of Baseball and the millions of loyal fans of this historic club. continued…

Ship That Buried bin Laden Could Host Carrier Classic

The Carrier Classic 11-11-11 featuring Michigan State and North Carolina will likely take place aboard the USS Carl Vinson in downtown San Diego, the same aircraft carrier that carried Osama bin Laden‘s body to sea.

“Now that the Carl Vinson is back safe and sound and America is now well-aware of the important mission that was tasked to the Carl Vinson, we find it to be a source of pride that this ship will make history twice in 2011,” said Mike Whalen of the Morale Entertainment Foundation.

A site survey is planned for early next week and there’s a 99 percent chance the game will be on the Carl Vinson, according to Whalen.

ESPN will broadcast the first men’s college basketball game to be played on the deck of a United States military aircraft carrier.

Sky Sports Changes Story After Man U's Owen Complains

Manchester United’s Michael Owen has been frustrated by his attempts to make team England in the last few years, but he took exception to a headline on Sky Sports that read “Owen gives up on England” and went on Twitter to express his displeasure. The broadcast website, in turn, changed the headline on the story and clarified Owen’s remarks.

In the initial story (available thanks to Yahoo! Cache), the lede read,

“Manchester United striker Michael Owens admits he has given up hope of being selected for England by Fabio Capello. The 31-year-old has not featured for his country since playing in a friendly against France in March 2008.

Owen has been continually overlooked by Capello and the former Liverpool man admits he is upset by his exclusion.

“I’ve given up trying to understand,” said Owen. “I’ve not given up on England. It’s come to an abrupt stop under this manager. You’d have a better idea than me [why that is].

“I was disappointed for the first squad I missed, a little bit less for the next one and after about three or four times, I didn’t really expect to see my name,” admitted Owen.

“For the first couple of squads I looked at the players [named] and looked at what I had done. For the last dozen squads, I haven’t looked. I don’t even think about [being picked] now. Honestly.

“It’s sad, really. If I keep getting up for something, then [find out] I am not in, I am just kidding myself.

“Some people say I might get back in the England squad after Fabio Capello leaves. I hope they are right.

“It helps playing more often. I am sure it depends on who the manager is.”

Owen then went on Twitter and complained to Sky Sports, “Why are you making things up? Please show me the quote where I am supposed to have said that/Just because I don’t expect to be picked doesn’t mean I’ve given up. Another example of twisting words to get a good headline.”

Apparently Sky Sports agreed, because they not only changed the headline, they changed the lede. The new headline reads, “Owen ‘sad’ over England.” And the lede goes,

“Manchester United striker Michael Owen admits he has given up trying to understand why he is not being selected for England by Fabio Capello.

The 31-year-old has not featured for his country since playing in a friendly against France in March 2008.

NBCUniversal's Kentucky Derby Coverage Rivals Olympics In Terms of Cross-Platform Convergence

NBCUniversal has announced its coverage plans for the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, and it is extensive. Much like NBCU does with the Olympic games, a number of networks and platforms will be in place to cover the derby, including some channels not typically associated with sports.

All told, NBCU will present 14 1/2 hours of coverage leading up to the race Saturday afternoon.

Among the participating channels and shows:

On NBC, “Today,” Al Roker and Jenna Wolfe will be live from Churchill Downs Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “Today” will also run a number of segments focusing on the Derby. During the fourth hour, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford will select a winner who makes the most interesting derby hat to send to the event.
