Mediabistro Adds Lost Remote to Blog Lineup

WebMediaBrands has sealed the deal on another blog acquisition. Lost Remote will be joining the mediabistro blog network.

“Combining Lost Remote with our other social media properties, as well as TVNewser and TVSpy, certainly solidifies our position as the leading blog network covering all aspects of television and cable news and analysis,” said our CEO Alan M. Meckler.

Started 13 years ago, Lost Remote was one of the first blogs to cover the evolution of the TV industry — in fact, it was one of the first blogs, period. Lost Remote has evolved over the years and now covers the fast-growing business of Social TV.

Founder Cory Bergman stays on as editor and Natan Edelsburg as lead writer. As we grow the site, we’ll also be looking to produce our first trade show in the social TV space.

“Few people had heard of social TV two years ago,” says Bergman, “but today it’s driving more innovation in television than we’ve seen in the last decade. MLB Fans Asked to Vote for Hall of Fame Broadcaster

Do you think Joe Morgan, Joe Buck or Tim McCarver are Hall of Fame-level broadcasters? If so, be sure to vote in the 9th annual Ford C. Frick Award contest, which will help winnow a field of 75 broadcasters down to one new member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Starting tomorrow and running through Sept. 30, fans can vote for their favorite broadcaster on the Hall of Fame’s Facebook page. The top three fan selections will be among the final 10 candidates for this year’s Frick Award, which will be selected by a 20-member board including last year’s winner Dave Van Horne, who currently broadcasts Marlins games, and the other living Frick Award recipients.

The 75 candidates include a pair of broadcasters from each Major League city, as well as numerous at-large candidates. Here is the full field:

NCAA.com To Debut College Football Preview Show

Vince Cellini and Dave Archer will host a new college football show on NCAA.com starting this Thursday at 12:00 p.m. ET.

The debut 30-minute show will focus on the top storylines for the upcoming 2011 college football season across the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II and Division III.

During the college football season, NCAA.com will broadcast a weekly preview show focused on upcoming matchups and feature exclusive interviews with coaches and players.

Bonds to Confront Bonds-hating Fan on New Show

Major League Baseball all-time home run king Barry Bonds* will appear in a new show called H8R, in which the former San Francisco Giants slugger will confront a fan who hates Bonds and try to convince the fan that he’s actually a good guy. The segment, which Bonds has yet to film, will begin with the fan explaining why he despises the star of the Balco drug trials, then segue to Bonds pleading his case directly to the fan.

Bonds, whose career ended in 2007, is one of the biggest lightning rods in baseball history. A preternaturally gifted athlete, he developed a reputation as surly and arrogant with fans, teammates and the media. He was convicted of obstruction of justice in April, following a trial in which federal prosecutors accused him of knowingly lying about taking performance-enhancing drugs. The jury deadlocked on allegations of perjury.

H8R, which also will feature episodes with Ron Artest, Charles Barkley and Terrell Owens, debuts on the CW network next month and will be hosted by Mario Lopez.

Former UNC Announcer Woody Durham Being Honored by NFF

The National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame is honoring Woody Durham, the longtime voice of North Carolina sports, with the 2011 Chris Schenkel Award, which recognizes a broadcaster who has enjoyed a long, distinguished career covering college football for one school.

Durham, who retired in April, covered Tar Heel sports for four decades. He was named North Carolina sportscaster of the year a dozen times during his career.

“Woody has been synonymous with Tar Heel football for four decades,” said NFF President and CEO Steve Hatchell. “An exceptionally talented broadcaster, his long list of honors reflects his unique ability to make fans feel as they are standing on the sidelines. We are proud to place him among the imposing list of storytellers who have previously claimed the Schenkel Award.”

Durham will be honored on December 6 at a dinner in New York City, where broadcasting legends Verne Lundquist and Brent Musburger will also be recognized by the NFF.

Soccer Writer Names Twins After Diego Maradona

Argentinian sportswriter Walter Rotundo named his new twin girls Mara and Dona, after one of the greatest soccer players of all-time, Diego Maradona.

You would think Rotundo, who covered Argentinos Juniors for the blog PasiÃ³n Paternal, would know not to name his kids after the guy who nearly died from his addiction to cocaine.

I know how important 1986 is to the country of Argentina, but last I checked, it had been 25 years now.

My apologies to the kids for any drug or alcohol addictions they pick up as a result of their names.

ESPN Films New MNF Opening at Florida University

Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, served as the host location for the production of this year’s Monday Night Football opening montage featuring Hank Williams Jr., as ESPN decided to use the creation of its well-known segment as a teaching opportunity. Production took place at Full Sail University’s “Full Sail Live” performance venue – a 22,000 square foot, high-definition facility – and 56 students from Full Sail’s entertainment industry focused curricula assisted ESPN over the course of the multi-day shoot.

“Over the years we have produced the show open for Monday Night Football at various locations,” said Bob Toms, vice president of TV production enhancements and interactive at ESPN. “While creating this year’s opening, we found Full Sail’s facilities to be beyond our initial expectations and we were truly impressed by both the enthusiasm and capabilities of the Full Sail students who volunteered and were selected to work on the project.”

Full details of the new production will not be revealed until MNF airs during the upcoming NFL season.

“When we launched our relationship with ESPN, we knew our students would have the opportunity to take part in large and small scale projects that would impact national and global audiences,” said Erik Noteboom, Full Sail’s vice president of education operations. “Hosting the production for ESPN’s Monday Night Football allows our students to participate in sports television history. We are humbled to play a part in such an iconic production.”

Mike Francesa Ending Mike'd Up After Seven Years

Radio talk show host Mike Francesa is ending his WNBC-TV Sunday night sports show, Mike’d Up, according to Newsday.com.

Ratings were strong during its seven years on the air, but Francesa wanted to spend more time with his family on the weekends.

Since the end of the NFL season, Francesa has hosted only three shows.

WNBC-TV sports anchor Bruce Beck has replaced him in his absence. No word on what WNBC-TV will do with the timeslot.

BBC Introduces 'Grunt-Reducing' Technology at Wimbledon

Maria Sharapova would have a lot more fans (ya know, more than she already does) if watching her play tennis wasn’t as punishing on the ears as it’s easy on the eyes. Sharapova is one of the tennis world’s most notorious grunters, which makes watching her matches a trying affair. To keep you tuned in, the BBC has introduced technology called Wimbledon Net Mix, a device for the radio and Internet that lowers the volume of on-court sounds and raises the noise level of commentators; and they’re using it for the first time at Wimbledon.

The product is available for free on BBC Radio Player. For the time being it only allow listeners to adjust the sound on Centre Court matches.

For those watching on television, mute or changing the channel remain the top options to combat grunting.

'Highly Unlikely' Hard Knocks Visits Carolina

Carolina Panthers center Ryan Kalil might want to get new sources.

According to Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton, HBO has not contacted the team about appearing on Hard Knocks.

In addition, a team official said it would be “highly unlikely” the organization would agree to let the network document their training camp.

Kalil started the rumors last week after sending out the following tweet: “Reliable source telling me possible reality sports doc TV series coming to NC after today’s media presence covering Panther POTA’s.”

UFC Looking To Purchase Part Of G4 Channel

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is in talks to buy an ownership stake of the G4 network from Comcast, according to reports.

The UFC’s current contract with Spike expires at the end of the year and executives are bracing for president Dana White to take his MMA empire elsewhere.

“There’s no doubt we’re looking around,” White said recently. “When I say we’re talking to everybody, we’re talking to everybody. That’s what you do when your deal is up. … Spike TV’s been there for a long time. I’ve got great relationships there, and hopefully we’ll stay on Spike TV.” continued…

Nearly Two Million Apply for Tix to See 100m Run at 2012 Games

Approximately 40,000 tickets will be made available for the 100-meter final of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, so organizers will have a difficult time meeting the demand of 1.82 million prospective spectators who have reportedly requested 20 million tickets to see if Usain Bolt can improve on his world record time of 9.69 seconds, set at the 2008 Games.

During the third period of Game 5 against San Jose, the Red Wings scored three goals against the Sharks to stave off elimination for the second straight game and inch within 3-2 in the series. This prompted commentator Jeremy Roenick to call Sharks center Patrick Marleau “gutless” and say he’s suffering from an injury — to his heart. Marleau, a former teammate of Roenick’s, has no points in the series and allowed a crucial turnover to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk that led to the Red Wings’ game-winning goal in the 4-3 victory.
