Q2 2014 Ratings: Fox News #1 For 50 Straight Quarters, 150 Straight Months

fox news logoFox News finished its 50th straight quarter and 150th straight month as the top-rated cable news network in June. Despite the milestone, Fox News — like all the cable news networks — was down compared to the same quarter last year, delivering its lowest quarter in the primetime A25-54 demographic in 13 years.

The ratings for Q2 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 1,588,000 total viewers / 265,000 A25-54
  • Total Day Mon-Sun): 940,000 total viewers / 189,000 A25-54

In total day, Fox News was down -20% in total viewers and -21% in the A25-54 demographic compared to Q2 2013; in primetime, the network was down -16% in both ratings measurements. It was FNC’s lowest-rated quarter in the primetime A25-54 demographic since Q2 2001, before 9/11.

All three primetime shows were down compared to Q2 2013. “The O’Reilly Factor” lost -17% in total viewers and -20% in A25-54 viewers, delivering the show’s lowest quarterly demo ratings since Q2 2001. “The Kelly File” was down -5% in total viewers and -15% in the demo compared to the 9pmET timeslot last year, while “Hannity” was down -18% and -16%, respectively, compared to the 10pmET timeslot last year.

“Fox & Friends” (6-9amET) and “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” (7pmET) delivered the lowest A25-54 audience in their timeslots since Q3 2001 and Q2 2001, respectively. Despite that, it was a milestone month for both shows: “F&F” and “OTR,” as well as “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” marked 50 straight quarters as the top-rated shows in their respective time slots (the consecutive quarters for Van Susteren’s show includes two different timeslots, 10pmET and 7pmET).

Q2 2014 Ratings: MSNBC Holds #2 in Primetime, Slips in Total Day

MSNBC held on to the #2 spot in primetime for the second quarter of 2014, second only to Fox News in both total viewers and the A25-54 demographic. But in total day, the network slipped to third in total viewers and fourth (CNN and HLN were tied for second) in the A25-54 demographic.

The ratings for Q2 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 570,000 Total Viewers / 159,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 334,000 Total Viewers / 103,000 A25-54

Like all the cable news networks, MSNBC was down compared to the same quarter last year. In total day, the network was down -7% in total viewers and -16% in the A25-54 demographic, and in primetime, the network was flat and down -17%, respectively.

“The Rachel Maddow Show” and “All In with Chris Hayes” were the only primetime cable news shows to be up compared to the same quarter last year. Both shows grew 5% in total viewers, although Maddow’s program was down -18% and Hayes’ program was down -22% in the demo compared to Q2 2013. “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” — which was guest-hosted in June by Ari Melber while O’Donnell recovered from a car accident — was down -12% in total viewers and -21% in the demo.

Q2 2014 Ratings: CNN #2 in Total Day Viewers

CNN was the second most watched cable news network in total day viewers for Q2 2014; it also tied with HLN for second in the daytime A25-54 demo.

The ratings for Q2, 2014:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 459K Total Viewers / 156K A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 341K Total Viewers / 105K A25-54

Compared to Q2 2013, CNN was down double digits in both total day and primetime viewers. In total day, the network was down -28% in total viewers and -35% in A25-54 viewers. For primetime, the net was down -31% in total viewers and down -32% in the demo.

Anderson Cooper 360” led the way for CNN, but was down -38% in total viewers and down -32% in the demo compared to the same quarter last year.  At 9pmET, the network had its lowest-rated total viewers quarter in 23 years (since 1991). CNN debuted its nightly original series and documentaries lineup in the 9pm timeslot midway through Q2.

For the month of June, CNN came in third in total day viewers, but placed fourth in the demo. In primetime, the net came in third in total and demo viewers. Year-over-year, CNN was also down -14%  in total day viewers and -15% in the demo. In primetime, the net was down -4% in both measurements.

Q2 Ratings: HLN Ties for #2 in Total Day Demo

hln logo_304x200For Q2 2014, HLN tied for second in the total day A25-54 demo, however a year after the Jodi Arias trial gave the net a ratings boost, it saw double-digit losses across the board.

The ratings for Q2, 2014:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 340K Total Viewers / 124K A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 247K Total Viewers / 105K A25-54

Compared to Q2 2013, when the network was in wall-to-wall Jodi Arias trial coverage, HLN is down -37% in total viewers and -26% in A25-54 demo viewers for total day. In primetime, they are down -34% in total viewers and -30% in the demo.

Nancy Grace led the way for the HLN in total viewers, drawing 316,000 total viewers. “Forensic Files” was highest-rated in the demo for the network with 136,000 viewers.

Fox News No. 1 for 50 Quarters

When the final Q2 2014 ratings come out tomorrow, Fox News will mark a milestone, one that has only been matched by ESPN in the cable TV universe. Fox News will mark 50 Quarters — or 12 and a half years — as the No. 1 cable news channel in total viewers in both total day and primetime. ESPN has done that in the sports category, which until recently, it had to itself.

Two of FNC’s shows, “Fox & Friends” and “Your World with Neil Cavuto” are also marking 50 quarters at No. 1. (Other shows like “O’Reilly Factor” and “On the Record” have even longer streaks). Thanks to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, we can share this graph of the quarter-to-quarter performances of FNC, CNN, MSNBC and HLN, going back to 2001.

We’ll have the full Q2 2014 cable news ratings highlights tomorrow.
