Curt Schilling: 'There hasn't been a team in the last 20 years that's won clean'

ESPN baseball commentator Curt Schilling, who plied his trade at the height of the so-called Steroids Era, told a Philadelphia radio station on Wednesday that offense is down around Major League Baseball because performance-enhancing drugs have been all but eradicated from the game.

“There’s a lot of good young pitchers in the game right now, but far fewer players are cheating,” Schilling said. “One of the bigger reasons they all did (steroids) was it allowed them to be April fresh in September and that helped you hit home runs. Anybody who ever says performance-enhancing drugs didn’t help players produce offensive numbers is full of crap.”

Schilling says he suspected some teammates on the 1993 Phillies were taking PEDs, but he says he never saw them using drugs or talking about them.

“It wasn’t something you would walk up to someone to talk about or ask them. You had your ideas. When guys showed up with 25 extra pounds on them after three months after you had seen them during the winter, you had an idea.”

Even though testing and the threat of stiff penalties have drastically curbed the use of PEDs, Schilling said cheaters remain.

“There isn’t a team in the last 20 years that has won clean,” he said.

Major League Soccer Team Ready to Grab Some Buds

You know what’s better than a jersey sponsor? A beer sponsor.

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Labatt Breweries announced a five-year partnership that will see Budweiser become the official beer of the expansion Major League Soccer club.

The Whitecaps’ colors are blue and white in homage to the brewery that was previously affiliated with the team.

Before the start of the 1979 NASL season, the club decided to re-brand. They wanted to better represent the West Coast, the mountains and the water that inspired Denny Veitch to name the team. But there was another big factor that shaped the evolution of the club’s trademark style.

Labatt was a major sponsor of the Whitecaps at the time, and they wanted their brand to be incorporated into the team’s new look. So, in a move that befits both organizations, the team changed their colors to blue and white.

Thirty years later, the tradition continues. Whitecaps games just got a little bit more fun.

ESPN's Ron Franklin Pulled From Fiesta Bowl Radio Broadcast After Incident With Jeannine Edwards

ESPN announcer Ron Franklin was pulled off Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl radio broadcast after an incident with sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards.

According to SportsByBrooks.com, the incident happened during a production meeting on Friday as part of the Chick-fil-A Bowl broadcast, which was also attended by ESPN announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore.

“During the meeting, the subject of Gilmore’s wife Marie being elected Alameda (CA) mayor came up. As Gilmore, Cunningham and Franklin discussed the subject, Edwards tried to join the conversation. When she did, Franklin said to her, “Why don’t you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes.” Edwards responded to Franklin by saying, “don’t call me sweetcakes, I don’t like being talked to like that.” Franklin then said, “okay then, a – hole.” After the meeting Edwards reported Franklin’s comments to ESPN management.” continued…

SBJ: Five Sports Predictions for When Comcast Completes NBCU Acquisition

Sports Business Journal‘s John Ourand has a column this week outlining five sports predictions for when Comcast finally completes its acquisition of NBC Universal.

It is a good read, which starts out obvious (Dick Ebersol will be running the new company’s sports division) but also includes some interesting thoughts on the RSNs and Versus.

For example, Ourand says the RSNs will likely be grouped with the NBC O&Os, allowing them to share resources, programming and staff:

To get an idea of Comcast’s thinking, look what the company is doing in Boston, where it essentially has merged CSN New England with New England Cable News. The two channels share resources and talent, and NECN’s sports reports are produced by CSN and staffed by CSN talent.

He also says that Versus’ days may be numbered:

continued…
