Couric Vs. Pitts: “How Can We Be No. 1?”

An e-mailer says: “Sparks are flying over Peter Johnson‘s piece on Katie Couric today — did you notice what she says versus what Byron Pitts says???”

Couric told USA Today that her comng in and becoming No. 1 “was never an expectation by anyone at CBS News.”

Does she really believe that?

In the next paragraph, Pitts, a national correspondent, says: “Every discussion starts and stops with, ‘How can we be No. 1?’ We’re like a franchise football team that went out and got a superstar and brought in some big hitters and we expected to be 8-and-0 at this point, and we’re not.”
