Michael Moore on His CNBC Visit: “The Place Really Reeked of Money”

FishbowlDC was on the red carpet last night for the premiere of Michael Moore‘s new film, “Capitalism: A Love Story.” Moore told us that among his favorite interviews promoting the movie have been with Martha Stewart and Bill Maher. And perhaps just as unshockingly, his least favorite: “Probably the ‘Power Lunch’ guys at CNBC. They had me fly all the way to New York yesterday to be the guest anchor for the hour. I was on for about six minutes and I guess someone decided ‘we can’t let him say anything else on the network.’ I was kind of told goodbye and that was that.” FBDC has the interview.

FishbowlDC also caught up with ABC’s Terry Moran who has an interesting take on the flm. “It will surprise people because it’s so religious, so openly spiritual:”

Here’s the story: Robach and Shue, who are both recently divorced, have five children between them. Robach has two girls and Shue, three boys. Sensing a theme?

They met at a “Today” show Mom’s book party this past Spring. Shue, who played Billy on the 1990′s FOX show “Melrose Place”, founded CafeMom.com in 2006 as part of his company CMI Marketing. And the rest, says a source, is history. “They’ve been inseparable since,” says the source. No date has been set but listen for wedding bells in early 2010.

One thing though, Amy’s daughters’ names aren’t Marcia and Jan.

Will Imus Affect ‘Morning Joe?’

As Don Imus‘ first air date at Fox Business Network approaches, NY Oberver’s Felix Gillette profiles how Imus and his previous network affiliation might change the dynamic of the time slot, saying that FBN is “unleashing Don Imus to compete against NBC, the media company that shunned him in his time of crisis.”

Gillette writes:

Some critics now argued that the addition of Mr. Imus would finally present CNBC with a serious challenge. Others wondered if FBN was simply giving up on business news altogether. But, at least in the short term, the arrival of Don Imus on FBN is less likely to impact CNBC than it is another NBC franchise — namely, MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Full article here. Imus’ FBN simulcast will debut October 5th.

Bill Hemmer Asked to Be Hero

College student Laura Tellado, who suffers from Spina Bifida, authors the blog “Holdin’ Out for A Hero,” where she writes about a different celebrity each day that she’s tried to contact in hopes that they can become a new spokesperson for the condition.

This week, she told the story of her meeting with Fox News’ Bill Hemmer — though he worked at CNN at the time — who she got to meet through an organization called New Hope for Kids when she was 17: “Their reaction was one of surprise, perhaps amusement, at the news that a 17-year-old girl wanted to meet a journalist for her big, fat, once-in-a-lifetime wish! My response probably was along the lines of, ‘Have you actually seen Bill Hemmer?’”

During their meeting, Hemmer had quite the impact on Laura and he appears to have remained in contact with her, “I have Bill and New Hope for Kids to thank for changing my career goals (I had studied theatre in high school!). To this day, we keep in touch every now and then.” She continues, “Whenever I achieve something, even a small milestone, I love sharing it with him, and he is always cheering me on.”

You can read more about her goal here. At the end of her post, she asks Hemmer to be her “hero” and says, “You never know the impact a particular person will have on your life, whether intentional or not. But that is exactly what has happened in regards to you. You not only touched my life — you changed it completely, and for the better. I am now putting to good use some long-dormant abilities through this blog!”

Update: We received an email from Ms. Tellado thanking us for linking to her site as traffic has gone up significantly. (Well done, everyone.) She also told us that Hemmer responded to her request, saying: “You are one special young lady! I am honored to be asked. And I am considering your offer.” You can read her post about that here.

Newsers Step Out for Byron Pitts Book Party

After dropping in at the TVNewser party downtown, we headed uptown to the Plaza Hotel where friends, family and colleagues gathered to celebrate the publication of CBS News correspondent Byron Pitts‘ book “Step Out on Nothing: How Family and Faith Helped Me Conquer Life’s Challenges.”

The room was packed with CBS, ABC and NBC newsers including CBS News and Sports president Sean McManus and NBC News president Steve Capus. Also on hand, “60 Minutes” EP Jeff Fager, GMA senior EP Jim Murphy, who worked for years at CBS; as did Mika Brzezinski now with MSNBC. Also, Lesley Stahl, Harry Smith, Hoda Kotb, Jeff Greenfield, Michelle Miller and Mara Schiavocampo.

“Step Out on Nothing,” which we began to read on the subway ride home, is an intensely personal look at how Pitts went from a functionally illiterate child to ascend to the ranks of network correspondent. He recounts being a youth trying to overcome a pronounced stutter to the nervousness he felt decades later as he sat in the “60 Minutes” studio for the first time.

The National Center for Family Literacy co-sponsored the book party. Pitts becomes the first author to join the NCFL’s “A Penny a Book” initiative to benefit family literacy across the country.

• More photos after the jump, plus click here to read Gail Shister‘s interview with Pitts…

Morton Dean: TV News “Spiraling Down Into a Deep, Dark Ravine”

Where Are They Now? A TVNewser Series

Today, TVNewser begins a multi-week series where we’ll catch up with some tvnewsers of yesterday to learn about their lives now, and their perspectives on the industry. We begin with former CBS and ABC newsman Morton Dean. Next week: former MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour co-anchor Robert MacNeil.

People don’t forget a distinguished voice.

Just ask Morton Dean. Retired from network news for eight years, he “surprisingly” still gets stopped by people who “usually say something about my voice, in a positive way,” he tells TVNewser. “And I always answer the same way. I [joke], ‘Are you saying to me that I had a great face for radio?’”

But make no mistake, they remember him from television, even recounting specific stories he filed over the years. That pleases Dean, a journalist to the core. “Once you’re in the business,” he explains, “you never quite leave the business, and it certainly doesn’t leave you.”

Morton Dean, 74, joined CBS News in 1963 via New York’s WCBS-TV. About two years later he moved to the network, where he spent two decades before logging another 14 years at ABC. Along the way, Dean anchored weekend editions of the CBS Evening News, was news anchor at Good Morning America, and traveled the world as a correspondent, covering everything from the Iranian hostage crisis to conflict in Kosovo.

Q3 Cable Ratings: FNC Shows Fill Top 10; #3 Network on Cable; Beck Grows Timeslot 136%

If you’ve been following the cable news ratings, and we know you have, you’ll know Fox News has been dominating, even more than usual, in 2009. In the just-finished third quarter, Fox News beat CNN and MSNBC combined in Total Viewers and the A25-54 demo in both total day and primetime viewing. FNC is also the only cable news network to post across the board gains vs. Q3 ’08.

• In Total Viewers, FNC was up 2% in primetime and up 8% in total day.

• In A25-54 viewers, FNC was up 5% in primetime and up 12% in total day.

• FNC was the third-ranked cable network behind ESPN and USA.

• FNC had the top 10 programs in cable news. “The O’Reilly Factor” has been the #1 cable news show for 106 consecutive months. From 4pmET to 11pmET, all of FNC’s programs showed growth, most double digits:

Rank/Show — Total Viewer / A25-54 demo growth
2. “Hannity,” — 9% / 17%
3. “Glenn Beck,” — 89% / 136%
4. “On the Record,” — 16% / 21%
5. “Special Report” — 20% / 34%
6. “The FOX Report” — 9% / 18%
9. “Your World” — 16% / 27%

And for the month of September, FNC claimed the Top 13 programs in cable news in Total Viewers, which hasn’t happened since Nov. 2004. It was the network’s best month for the year in today day with Total Viewers and A25-54 viewers. Also, “America’s Newsroom” (9-11amET) with Megyn Kelly and Bill Hemmer had its highest rated month (and quarter) in A25-54 viewers.
