Aaron Brown, who was replaced in 2005 by [Anderson] Cooper at 10 p.m., said that CNN doesn’t have the “big, broad personalities” that seem to excel these days in the evenings on cable news. Brown included himself in that group, along with Campbell Brown, John King, and Cooper.

“If I were at CNN, the thing that would scare me is not that we’re losing, but that it’s that re-runs are beating us,” Brown said. “At 10 p.m., a two-hour-old ‘Countdown’ is beating my guy, the guy I have invested millions in promotional dollars.”

Another former cable news host, Phil Donahue, who had a show on MSNBC in the early 2000′s hopes CNN does nothing. “At this moment, their competition is more entertaining than they are,” Donahue told Calderone. “And I admire them for holding on and not being seduced by that kind of arm-waving.”

BBC World News America will be presented an award for its “unique broadcast.” “A nightly newscast like none the United States has ever had,” write the Peabody organizers. Correspondent Lyse Doucet is also being awarded a Peabody for reporting from Afghanistan’s rugged Badakshan province.

Sawyer, whose Appalachia documentary “reminds us that not all critical problems lie in ‘developing’ nations,” write the organizers, also hosts this year’s awards ceremony on May 17.

Other non-news winners: “Glee,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and “Modern Family.”

FNC was the only network to show growth in each ratings category and, for the second consecutive quarter, FNC programs were the top 13 in cable news in Total Viewers. FNC also had the top 13 programs in the demo this quarter. Every FNC program was up against Q1 of ’09.

Two evening news programs, “Special Report with Bret Baier” (2.46M total/541k demo) and “Fox Report with Shepard Smith” (2.11M total/526k demo), each had their best quarters ever. Those programs saw a benefit from FNC’s 5pm program hosted by Glenn Beck which saw the largest year-to-year increases of all shows in the demo (up +50%). Greta Van Susteren and Bill O’Reilly were both up more than +20% in the demo compared to Q1 of ’09.

Fox News was the #2 basic cable network in primetime and averaged more Total Viewers in primetime and total day than CNN, MSNBC, and HLN combined.
